People don’t actually realise that the food they get in plastic wrappers used to be alive, My 5yearold cousin thought that food like that Pork/lamb/etc used to be grown in the ground!!! January 12, 2008 at 2:26 pm #1151710Just watched it and found it very interesting –
and felt quite dumb also..
I always buy organic free range eggs but had not even considered where the egg ‘ingredients’ in my mayonaise / quiche etc came from…so will now have to do a bit more research before my next shop..
hadnt even heard of this ‘wet egg’ business… quite yucky

January 12, 2008 at 3:13 pm #1151706my mum always talks about these chickens and how they taste much better than the ones sold in Western shops..

“Orang Asli” (means a foreign worker in Malaysia, usually from Indonesia, the Phillipines or China). Those might look like bamboo huts (well they are TBH) but half the people there have mobiles and broadband!
the amount he paid works out as £1.50 a bird…
13 chickens may seem like a lot but he is probably getting some for his work colleagues, and this amount of birds would probably last 2 Malaysian Chinese extended families a week (many families still eat together in that part of the world).
Note how the kids have been drafted in to catch the chickens! If you tried that here with the local kids today, I expect social worker types would probably have you arrested (I expect many of the kids wouldn’t be able to run fast enough anyway to catch the chickens..)
Maybe with the floods/global warming PP could set up a kampung in West Berkshire :laugh_at:

January 12, 2008 at 3:48 pm #1151711My mum and dad kept chickens whilst we were growing up in suburbia for the eggs, and we used to sell some eggs as well
They didnt have meat birds as we became quite attatched to them,
and when one was irrepairably ill my dad had to kill it and I hid and watched and it was the first time I’d seen my dad cry.. 😥and co-incidentally we had chicken for tea that night and none of us could eat it as we thought of our bird…
I think these programs (although clearly biased) are good for raising awareness and getting people talking if nothing else
I’m trying to wear Mr Tank down as I want 2 birds but its a slow process….. 😉
