Hey there. My name is Scotty I used to post on this board from time to time. I have met a few cool friends on here, hope everyone is doing well. Sorry but I am on a borrowed laptop, my motherboard on my PC surged out and is in the repair shop. Anyway, I just thought I would share that Naustro (as a namesake) is being put to rest as far as future releases go, at least that is the general plan. Impasse Theory is a name I thought up on July 12th of 2014 for an “idea”. This idea has recreated itself from as early as 2000 when I was 14 and made what was then some chromatic and hyped, but pretty dark and atmospheric sounding music which I have today dubbed Darkstep. At that time, especially here in little nowhere where I live, no one listened to any Electronic Music, much less Drum’n’Bass. I liked Current Value at the time, and a lot of underground artists that made their way to my hears, but The Panacea was not one of them to be honest, way too “stereotypical hardcore” to me. After making these 3 tracks I decided I would just sell them, hell, no one knew what it even was, what was I going to do with it? The Computer Lab teacher let me use a few bits of audio equipment peripherals I had attained on my own. Much later, in 2014 I got my hands on this music, even forgetting I made such things, but to me it actually sounded like me, more like me than what I had made as Naustro (60 songs LULZ) All of 2014 I tried to recreate an idea, not so much a sound, but a methodology. So I have dropped my namesake as Naustro, so I will be creating Impasse Theory, simply as a formality. It has history, it has spunk, it can be literally whatever I want it to be, and even the stuffiest of people have supported it. Sometimes it is beat heavy, sometimes glitch, sometimes nothing but ambiance and chill, but it is me, really me, not some attempt at being something new or different. I would like you to check out this Spotify link to this release. I was only 14 when I made it, and though the original audio itself is lost, it has not been changed. Thank you very much, and here is to possibilities. Also, in case you like what you hear on the Highschool 2000 3 track single, my Soundcloud has my full playlist, including free remixes. It will be the link on the bottom. Thanks a lot you all.raaa

welcome back 🙂 good stuff, I tried a bit of that myself at age 16 (I found a ancient analogue synth and a valve operated Leslie speaker in a storecupboard) but had to use things like ancient Philips tape recorders and spools of tape for loops (that had been abandoned in 1980s) as there weren’t any affordable sequencers for high schools at that time (1988)… I did actually get a decent “acid house” sound out of the kit though…

PS: Its worth getting decent UPS units with AVR to protect PC’s regularly used for music, work etc. They aren’t that expensive (at least in Europe, and we have 230V and stricter wiring regulations). The electric company does not always send the best quality power down the wires…

Well to be honest back then, and even now, it’s all experimenting. I’m no audiophile just yet, maybe in some alternate universe where I would have continued down that path lol but you know I was just a kid then I just screwed around with some av/3.5mm stuff and had a compressor or processor or something, like those old reverbs, to alter the sound, and screwed with that, and basically I just got some cheapo stuff just to toy around with the sound, it never got serious. But I got my music back and I just listened and for some off reason felt like I could do that again, and better as a adult. And I get what you are saying, I lived in the time of the PC, it wasn’t big or advanced yet but still, they were around. It was really just me and another would-be teen, he was 16 and went by iRabbot, which I actually came up with. He stole my music basically, just like a 16 year old stealing a 14 year old freshmen’s stuff only it had a bit more sentamental value to it then I thought at the time. Actually, I plan to get a Sony DSR 1800A and one of those Sound Processors again, and of course some kind of laptop or get my PC fixed as I am not a mixer or turntables kinda guy. All the stuff I plan to get has it’s own power supply, and the Sound Processor actually is suppose to be able to be used on PC just for the hell of it if you want, if you run it through. All of this is just speculation for different methods of making music and getting better sound and ways to make them. Someone told me a long time ago that synth is important but I just don’t hear it most times, not important to me really. Is there a cheap way to limit power to both of those things? The Sony DSR 1800A and the Audio Processor? A cheap way? If I get all that stuff I’m getting it’s gonna drain my wallet.

Various cheap but effective outboard effects units are around these days; Behringer do some affordable ones; although if you are looking for a authentic “retro” sound you’d probably have to consider buying or building analogue effects units (there’s a few circuit diagrams online).

A Sony DSR1800A is a DVCAM / miniDV studio edit deck for video ; Sony haven’t made pro audio kit for many years. But there were from the 80s/2000s various multitrack digital recorders which used video tapes and it would be possible your high school had one; or that the device was part of a multimedia editing system and used to record what could well be high quality audio (for the era) by just feeding some random but good quality video signal into it (to keep it synchronised). what was this devices used for? if it was for the recording/mastering it would make little difference to the end result to just use a more modern digital audio recorder or your DAW software.

The UPS you mentioned is a 120V version similar to (but larger capacity than) a 230V model I use at home and is being sold at a good price for the capacity; although the runtime is just about enough to shut everything down clean. Thankfully the power quality where I live has got better but there are occasional sags/surges due to weather or faults elsewhere in the region.

I could use the Sony DSR1800A with audio editing no problem, that with my DAWS I would have an improved capability to alter and edit my tracks, not so much the mastering though, I like to make the recording sound as good as possible though. Only reason I was gonna get is is cause it edits audio as well as video, and I was thinking of even experimenting with the video aspect of it if i wanted to make some simple effects. I decided I don’t really need the Processor since I can do all that with a computer with my sampling, I mean my samples are altered and distorted to hell, although it would be nice I don’t know. I just came across it here and wanted to get it and see if I could put it in my music, I can get it for 225 dollars I just thought to get it since the ones for audio I saw are super expensive. But I might just stick with DAWS and Mixers and all the stuff I used on my PC. And no no it doesn’t have to be a retro sound I just like to alter sounds to a great degree. We have brownouts here, and a lot of storms, so power goes off a pretty good bit. This last time knocked out my Motherboard. So I will definitely get the UPS thing for my PC, regardless. Thanks a lot for recommending it. I’m really just looking to experiment with some cheap to somewhat cheap equipment is all, and at the same time get something I could figure out and maybe use in my music by putting it on disk, and like I said, experiment with tapes, and different inputs/outputs.

if you want to add visuals you’d be better off doing that with the computer as well – many broadcasters were moving away from tape when I was a broadcast engineer in the late 1990s/early 2000s and there isn’t much advantage in using a digital tape recorder nowadays for audio or video and a lot of extra hassles (I just about managed to rescue my mini DV footage from the mid 2000s before the transport mechanism in my camcorder became too unreliable (to the point it could lock up and chew up the tapes).

The only time tape gives a particular sound is when analogue recorders are used and those are becoming hard to get and way expensive and so is the tape (about €30 for one 18cm spool!)
