June 28, 2007 at 9:29 am #1114418I know what you mean, I used to have having the light cheapo blue ones (when I was a nipper) with the stiff black cables, made it a bloody pain to keep in the stand. I used to harvest electronic components by going round the back of the local electricals store where they had the knackered returned appliances, removing what I could with my little tool kit, taking it all home in my backpack and getting to work on them… I’d melt the solder on a pin and pull the component through, sometimes with bare fingers. Lots of burns but well worth it!
Those were the days…

June 28, 2007 at 11:22 am #1114413Solder burns fookin kill! So you have me sympathy for that, but really just use a bit of care and you shouldnt end up burning yourself or screwing up anything around what you are soldering.
I have sat on my bed and soldered in the past with no major issues, well there are no holes in my bed sheets and i never burnt the house down! raaa

June 28, 2007 at 11:57 am #1114409soldering is one of those skills where practice helps.(as well as getting a decent soldering iron and the right size for the job).
I used to actually build stuff out of discrete components (like winstonsmith mentions), I have repaired stuff to component level before.. I can (or could) just about deal with SMDs (surface mount devices) but find them extremely fiddly.
I fear my own skills have got rusty as I haven’t done much since 2001-02, when I moved from hardware/embedded systems work to software development and more recently to a management position….
Nowadays I end up sitting in front of a computer and don’t deal with the hardware side of things quite as much, particularly since stopping major involvment in free parties at the end of 2005… (where I would help out my then local crew with wiring/power distribution etc)
