I’m curious. How do you go about starting your own radio station?

I don’t know too much about starting an internet radio station either but I’ve heard it can be fun. So if any one in this forum knows how please share with the rest of us… Thanks!

You need a website (domain name and server). you need server software for the radio stream like shout cast or ice cast. You’ll need a client software like edcast to connect your djs to the server, or do this in house.

Each set up is diferant so it’s best to research the diferant programs etc, and see what suits you best.

There are also places that host radio stations for you if you pay them.

I doubt it’s the best way to earn an income (especially if people can’t get to your website properly). We run our radio for free here. The forum traffic and donations generate the juice that keeps the servers alive.

Mby if you got into something like high end micro chip design, or satellite imaging device design, it would be a better income. It’s still fun to do online radio though, and brings joy to a lot of people worldwide.

If you have a lot of adverts on your radio station you might make a decent income, but you need the traffic going through your servers to be enough for the advertising companies to pay you well.

It’s a brief, but hopefully inclusive enough to set you in the right direction.

I’m sure there’s a lot of useful inform already on the forum if you have a dig about.

A lot of these post come from small countries in Asia. Out there it is far easier to set up a traditional radio station than it might seem, and if you can get reliable Internet service from your telephone company you can stream on line as well.

You do need to work with the Communications Ministry, but many make it easier than doing it in Britain, especially in rural areas. Your license conditions may say you cannot just play electronic pop music 24/7 but must have talk programmes, news and weather in the morning, and shows for any minority languages spoken by your community, and about farming and environment – and if there should be an environmental incident (floods, earthquake etc) you must have some emergency equipment so that you can give out news and support to your area.

Check with your local and national Governments, and the UN – they are actually very supportive of community radio in Asia these days.
