      hi have been learning to mix on belt drives for about 8months now,not doing too bad also been on technics belonging to mates from time to time,but find the technics obviously different to the belts(i must be the only person in the entire universe who can use century old wooden belts,but cant play on technics)what your used to i spose ,so have decided to totally stay off technics till i manage to aquire some of my own anyway point being do people ever come across second hand directs on here,been on e-bay but the prices go up so quick and do work etc,but due to circumstances of life unfortunately aint no millionaire take care

        keep asking your local record store. Also, don’t get too fixated on technics. plenty of good numark models available for a lot less £

          ISTR reading somewhere (the old usenet groups?) that learning to mix and beat match was a skill a bit like riding a bicycle; once learned it is not forgotten and is adaptable. In the same way I use different techniques for controlling a mountain bike as opposed to a tourer; it is easy enough once you are practised to get the feel of all kinds of turntables.

          People were beat matching using turntables before the Technics 1200 was invented in the 1970s; I once read a book on DJ’ing (written in the early 1980s) which mentioned other earlier Technics direct drive models and the Garrard 401 [ask your dad what this is!] being used for this purpose…

            No suggestions for where to buy, sorry. But I learnt on poor quality belts and found it a bit hard when I progressed to Technics. But I learnt how to be carefull and make very subtle adjustments. So when I did get the hang of technics I found it easier than people who had been learning on technics for their mixing life.
