hi there and welcome to partyvibe!

a lot has happened in 5 years

violent scum have rinsed all the “londonistan” parties

and cops have clamped down big time.

no one uses partylines much any more unless they want a “chavs vs cops cockney stab up session” where “bare heads get shanked and nuff people have to go whittington and homerton 2 get patched up innit”

a lot of the free party people are now moving their events into licensed venues but with a similar low door tax and security so people don’t get turned over.

you haven’t missed much apart from risks to your personal safety

parties still happen though – HDFK events are still safe but decent london parties are a lot smaller and you have to know people to find out where they are (usually in smaller squats).

check out our calendar – the new low-cost licensed events are all there; and you will probably see a lot of names of DJ’s/crews you recognise.

BTW I remember your screenname from somewhere, were you on DC?

So being a dj is more about the glory? Maybe in some instances, but I think you are sorely mistaken if you think that’s why everbody takes up dj’ing.

no,no dont get me wrong I dont think that at all.But a few yrs back when it suddenly became really hip to be a dj and the world and his wife wanted to do it,it just felt like people had forgotten what it was all about and being treated like a pop star and getting paid shitloads of money took precedence. That side put me off a bit as I always just wanted to play the music.

I’ll agree with that yeah. It still goes on and it makes me a bit sick really.

I enjoy going to clubs sometimes but 50% of the time I get a little bitter when I see the massive ego of the dj and all the people that massage it. What I hate most is that most dj’s don’t get booked based on talent. It’s who they know and what they can do for you in return. Most of the nights round my way work on a “i’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” basis and it means you end up getting all the same dj’s playing at each others nights. Pretty crap really.

Its like that round here too, all the wee dj’s know all the promoters and get the gigs coz they’re all pal’s..
I live in Glasgow but have played more clubs in Edinburgh coz people have heard me play at free parties and liked my stuff so i got to play at their club nite.
I’ve only played 1 club in glasgow and part of the problem here is that coz i’m female and I play harder techno than most of the guys who run the nights they can’t have that.. oh no i mean a woman playing harder techno than them can’t have that.. [mouse]Well i never…[/mouse]

Thats why i still prefer playing at free parties, better crowd of people an no bloody pretentiousness and people are there for the music not because its the “in” place to be…

agreed – I never much liked the commercial rave scene even in the early 90s as I could see it was a cartel of all the DJ’s keeping hold of their bit and not letting in many newcomers, and parts of it were pretty much run by gangsters

when the urban music scene becomes a male-dominated youth movement based around ego, fashion and macho posturing, it can get to the point where its actually a security threat as it encourages a culture of aggression and criminality….

consider that all the shootings in both London and the North seem to take place around clubs playing UKG, Grime and other urban music with a more commercial tip the promoters are really aggressive sometimes and try to fuck over each others events with stuff like hoax calls to cops about gunmen, CS canisters let off in events / fire alarms set off and all sorts of other fuckery…

this used to happen at raves (although it was rarer) but as Grime/Eski is getting the money at the moment people are hungry for the crumbs from the commercial music industry’s table

and when it becomes commercial it becomes a competition and a real dog eat dog (or dog shoot dog) world!

Absolutely. Its not suprising really though,as thats the way it is witheverything in this country anyway really. Its all about who you know, and the few fatcats at the top of the tree who earn shitloads.

yeah i know what you mean.ive only ever played at free parties.its just not the same in a hot club full of beer boys is it!As a female though i have to admit ive been offered far more opportunities to play in clubs than my male friends in the business.and most of them were far more dedicated than me.Its always been more of a hobby and love of collecting music.
