it is apparently a Golden Pig year as well as a Fire Pig year, (as the colour of Fire is gold ) which is supposed to be a good year for those with young families or expecting a baby…

Sounds like they just had a massive fireworks dispaly in aber. either that or the local gangs have finally got their hands on some shotguns.

The new year period lasts 15 days.

Depending which part of Eastern or SE Asia you are in the actual public holiday is anything from 2 days (in Malaysia/Singapore) to 7 days in Mainland China.

Many nations get 3 days public holiday (and in most modern areas workers can get more leave if they book it with their company, same as in the West).

I think we are hard done by here in Britain with a single bank holiday for (western) new years….

If you work for a Malay company here you get 2 days holiday but Ive been told that if your company is Chinese you get up to 10 days off,Im in Miri in Sarawak at the mo and the people Im staying with are Chinese and theres a massive Chinese community here so on new years eve it got REALLY LOUD and the last 2 days there has been nothing but cymbals and drums crashing and dragon dancers coming round to peoples houses an fireworks going off which yesterday morning was painfull as I had drunk a bottle of vodka on new years eve and was recovering wiv a massive hangover.
