DG: About a week ago you were discussing homeschooling for your kid – I expect theres other parents on here who may be interested as well…
I found this on another site, taken from the minutes of some social forum meeting in Ipswich. I think Wild Meadows is some sort of parents’ support group. OK its some distance away from Beds but you might be able to get in touch with people at this place (if you want I will look for info)
Disclaimer: I don’t have kids, nor do I want any (so I’m not sure how feasible or effective this project is) but I think this is a really cool idea and that if kids grew up like with schools like this they will be less likely to to stab each other in the playgrounds or grow up setting fire to stolen cars etc…
Quote: Mel from Wild Meadows followed up with a positive talk. In 2003 a group of parents came together who were unhappy with state education – bullying, the databasing of children* and state education forcing negativity on them. The group didn’t want to home-educate on their own. So they started meeting at Ringsfield Ecostudy Centre between Beccles and Bungay. None of them were professional teachers. She said: “Ringsfield allowed us to use their centre, set in 14 acres of land, and they were going to build a sustainable centre from straw bales for their horses, but allowed us to build it for our kids instead.
“At the end of last year we pulled our children, seven of them, out of school and began to construct our building, and eventually we will use it for peer-to-peer education. We paid someone to advise us.
“We started by levelling the land and had to learn how to use a mini-digger. Then we had to get tyres, which have to be the right size, and due to new regulations we had to register where they were going. The tyres have to be rammed with aggregate. A ladder-type frame is laid on top, and then a frame is built upwards from the foundation with hazel poles, that the straw bales are impaled upon.
“At the top, you put on another ladder-type frame, and then you ‘gripple’, putting flexible pipes over the bails, and pulling down the bails to compact them. To get to this stage it cost us £1,000 to get the walls up. But we had no money for a roof, and we’ve had no funding, but we’ve put on gigs, cabarets, begged in newspapers and have raised about £3,500 towards the building, and we’re now starting to think about the energy systems. We want to go entirely on renewable energy but there aren’t a lot of resources available to help search.
“We want to make it as far as possible a situation where our kids are teaching us as much as us teaching them. We are now up to about 18 children and more are contacting us, and we’ll have a maximum of 20. Children who were labelled as problem children have had a big turnaround in behaviour. The teaching is very different, the parents are there, and there is much more autonomy.”

Children are having vast amounts of their personal information, including sexual preference, parents’ details and political leanings, and later the political leanings of the children themselves, details such as thumbprints etc. The plan seems to be to build up a massive and comprehensive database on everyone from a very young ageMay 17, 2006 at 7:49 pm #1073841wow wow iv been looking for some info about this idea for ages, thank u so much for posting thismaybe i can use this thread to get othr parents in the east anglia/norfolk area to come together to create something similar. i am really interested, i have friends with babies and expecting babies who have been discussing this for a whiile and would be up for it, but if there are any more can u make urself known?!
May 17, 2006 at 7:56 pm #1073837fantastic
respect to those people for doing what they believe
and I can easily believe that they’ve had a real turnaround in the education and development of children labelled ‘problem’
i’ve been looking into setting up a school here, with one idea for funding being to have Swedish on the curriculum; it seems quite a few Swedish women start families with English men ans Sweden will make a contribution to any school that perpetuates the language
combining it with a sustainable building like this would be something incredible
GL… do you know these guys? put us in touch?
May 17, 2006 at 8:08 pm #1073835I don’t know the home education lot personally – I only found this whilst on a social forum website for East Anglia

TBH I think groups such as this don’t have the resources (yet) to produce flash websites (maybe when they are more established they can get the kids to help produce one!)
As I mentioned this came up whilst I was looking for other stuff about my new area and it just came from a report of a social forum meeting, which I didn’t get a chance to attend. I will try and make some enquiries though.
Perhaps also try contacting the earth education lot by phone; and get in touch with sound girl (who may not that far away from you) to share ideas etc..
The education otherwise link earlier in the thread also had mailing lists you can sign up to….
