I volunteer for a community arts group called art in the Park which does workshops every month in Sheffield, in parks mainly around council housing estates. The workshops encourage children to get involved in making art. We are a registered charity and receive funding from the Arts Council, unfortunately I heard this news from someone on the management commitee..
Quote:we heard last week that the funding application we submitted to the Arts Council has unfortunately not been successful. The management committee are working hard to make alternative plans and gain other funding so that Art in the Park can continue after May, when our current funding will come to an end. There are already exciting plans being made for summr events and beyond, with lots of support being shown from other organisations and everyone is responding positively.Hopefully we will continue to do these workshops.

I think there is a similar thing around where I live with mosaics particularily underpasses and alleyways ~ they certainly brighten up journeys and look wonderful not to think of what it means for some people to have there work permenantly on display and to be part of something!
best of luck!
March 22, 2007 at 9:28 pm #1101717it’s always a shitter getting those rejection letters from funders
just have to pick yourselves up and try again 😉
depending on how switched on your management committee are, they should be aware that there are a lot of other sources of funding available, other than the arts council
they might want to try this one >>> http://www.garfieldweston.org/
good luck with it
March 22, 2007 at 10:46 pm #1101716might seem like a strange suggestion but why not try getting some money off the “combatting anti-social behaviour” budget by getting your management commitee to argue that if kids do art projects on their blocks they may be less likely to vandalise the area?
been tried down south and has worked to get funding (although sadly the older chavs have sometimes often trashed the artwork) but it might have a better chance up North… (maybe make your designs vandal proof, ask the kids themselves how they would protect them or make them durable maybe :groucho:)
