BT have sent me a new router for some reason (they reduced my broadband bill as well).
I am going to install this now – this will either go smoothly or I will disappear off the internet for hours/days – so I’m letting you all know for those who have sent me messages or may be wondering why I suddenly go quiet…
November 11, 2006 at 2:38 pm #1093986You better get back soon or we’ll find you :weee:
November 11, 2006 at 2:46 pm #1093978back on line now with new router! Wasn’t quite as bad as I feared (although now my network printer is confused by new settings)..
shouldn’t be more than 5 mins or so sorting this out raaa
November 11, 2006 at 3:18 pm #1093979printer on wired lan now working – now got the laptop back on the wireless part of the network…
everything back up and running now…
This has to be the quickest I have ever got a bit of BT-provided kit up and running; I’m quite impressed TBH..
PS: if anyone else gets one of these “Home Hub” things and wants help settting them up (or for that matter a home network) let me know…

I can get the net through my laptop but not my computer at the same time. Also I can’t get the wireless to work on my laptop either
Maybe its because im rubbish with computers lol..
November 11, 2006 at 4:37 pm #1093980One thing I did forget to say is that when I first got BT back in May I had to tweak the original BT software (i.e remove some bits of it that were rubbish!)
I’ll start with the wired connection as thats easier to deal with for the moment (as BT’s software disk as delivered has a daft bug in it which can cause problems with wireless setups)
how are you connecting the laptop and desktop at the moment?
I assume you are using the two ethernet ports on the back of the hub.
what happens when you plug both the machines in at the same time? do you get error messages etc?
November 11, 2006 at 5:17 pm #1093984Yeah man was using the two ethernet ports, but just tryed turning my other comp on for the first time in a couple of months and it wont start up now dam it. Going to get a new one in the next few weeks anyway, if I have any problems setting up a network up ill look you up if thats ok.
Ill try set up the wireless again later, see if I can work out what the problem was with that. A bug in the disk you say ?
November 11, 2006 at 5:30 pm #1093981if you have ended up with a program called “Wireless Configuration Manager” from the BT disk remove it (I think its part of that “BT Broadband Helper”). The version I encountered contained a bug that caused the wireless network hardware to sign on to the first unsecured network it found irrespective of what you had set as the default WLAN!
caused untold hassle when I first came across it in May, took me a while to work out what was going on!
Disable this, also any other “wireless config manager” your laptop manufacturer may have bundled and let Windows look after the wireless connections.
The encryption for these BT boxes is WEP and the default encrypt key is on a label on the back of the router, marked BT Home Hub Wireless Settings (don’t use the other one marked BT Fusion, thats for something else)
By doing this I’ve mannaged to get my laptop (Toshiba Portege) working on all WLANs at multiple sites I visit…
November 11, 2006 at 5:43 pm #1093985Nice one, have got a program called “Wireless Configuration Manager” from the BT on here. Will take that off and try again. Cheers 🙂
November 11, 2006 at 9:48 pm #1093982top tip: do not reset the VOIP configuration whilst listening to streaming media, if you don’t want some seriously nasty digital noise blasting your speakers! (should have thought about that, VOIP is just another form of streaming audio after all…)
all working now though, got an extra phone line as well :bounce_fl -
