flash player (at least some versions) use software rendering when windowed but full hardware acceleration (if available) when full screen; there are also equivalent Linux apps which can use the hardware acceleration.

I installed something called “ubuntu studio” on this 10 year old Tosh laptop that has a busted keyboard and flaky touchpad, so added the full size peripherals to it and put it in the space now vacated by the TV-set (which is supposed to eventually be my electronics workbench); I often find myself needing to refer to a datasheet or online resource and Linux does seem to have a lot more free electronics based apps (although I still hardly understand them and will probably persist in writing my circuit diagrams out in shaky longhand as my electronic skills aren’t much more advanced than they were in 1987…)

This computer will play back video in decent quality (though its audio output is really rough from the cheap replacement PSU; there are harmonics into several MHz range, enough to disrupt the S-VHS signal if I try and feed its audio output via the telly)
