no thats just the bbc etc’s excuse for not reporting it. the media in this country is guilty of avoiding many humanitarian disasters. indonesia and tibet off the top of my head (hundreds of thousands dead). do you really think the bbc couldnt have been there reporting years ago if they wanted to? its not like they dont have the money. they will only report stuff they think people will watch, and monks facing guns makes great telly. cynical, but there you go.
