to have something like an allotment scheme where anybody who doesnt use there garden to grow veg can sign up to this scheme saying that they will allow a neighbour or someone else to come and use it and share the food with the person whose garden it is.
could have a forum for the village where people can sign up who are looking to grow more food and people who want people to grow, also have a food swap section, seed bank, tips, growing calander etc etc. i reckon it’s a really good idea! could have one major forum for the whole of the area and then split it up into each town and village in that area, would think it would be a ideal advertising opportunity for many companies as well. :weee:
November 30, 2010 at 7:45 pm #1232078I’ve heard of something simila to this b4 somewhere .. but can’t for the life of me thing where … it’s a really good idea tho as it’s ashame to waste perfectly good land!

Hi Process ,
Thats an excellent idea , help people save some on food and people who know how to grow things can pass their knowledge onto those that dont . Plus its gonna bring people together . Your Dads a great thinker 🙂regards

its based on Community Supported Agriculture which already happens on a slightly larger scale in the USA and in some parts of the UK. its the sort of thing Transition groups do except there isn’t one in the Gipping Valley region yet (there are some in Ipswich, Fram, Sax and Diss).

have you got any links to any websites?
November 30, 2010 at 8:01 pm #1232068November 30, 2010 at 8:05 pm #1232083Absolutely excelent idea! Growing your own veg is not only envirometally sound but extremly rewarding. The more people who have this kind of knowledge the better if you as me!
November 30, 2010 at 8:16 pm #1232074just found this site Landshare – connecting growers to people with land to share. but think there would be room for a more localised forum that would really help with getting neighbours to chat and get good communtiy vibe going. like you say mungo gonna bring people together, which would also be one of the main benefits!
that one where you have to pay gl is good, but be better i think if it was all through volunteers and free, obv people have to put there own money in at start, but would get it back massivly once it was up and running!
November 30, 2010 at 8:41 pm #1232069Joanne’s scheme is more an extension of her existing 10 acre farm and the organic veg sold there – its basically a discount in return for the work.
Bear in mind this is targeted at a much more urbanised area than where you parents live and at people who don’t have the same level of knowledge or skills – Ipswich is more like Essex than Suffolk with a very strong influence from London and not full of as many green fingered folk as Mid Suffolk or Coastal areas….
December 1, 2010 at 12:56 am #1232079Daftfader needs to sell his veg or he’s gonna be fucked!
December 1, 2010 at 12:04 pm #1232081nice idea but there are already schemes like this (river cottage are part of one I believe).
December 1, 2010 at 12:12 pm #1232070there isn’t one in that area or I’d have heard about it. its only 16 miles away from where I live 😉 This is surprising given the amount of hippies, eco-warriors etc in the vicinity. (its also near where John Peel lived for much of his life).

yeah i think its that landshare link i posted that is run by river cottage, but thats for the whole of the uk. passing of knowledge and lots of cheap food isnt the only benefit, the closer relationships it will bring between neighbours and people in local community could be seen as just a big benefit.
December 1, 2010 at 3:19 pm #1232080They do it here in the UK as well!
December 1, 2010 at 9:09 pm #1232077quality idea – there is a massive waiting list in our area for one so sharing would be great
My dad has had his for eons and when he got ill and couldnt go down there they kept threatening to take it off him!! bastards, I think it has to do with wanting to put price up to meet demand as he’s on the ‘old contract’
but the council are utter c***s they accidentally roatered the wrong plot (his instead of the one next door that was totally overgrown!!)
and dug up around £2000 of his daffodil bulbs that he has built up over years and years (its his passion = he ‘shows’ them- bless)
and so he complained enough til they paid him the money back = havent seen him so upset for years!! :crazy_dizDecember 1, 2010 at 9:10 pm #1232082@process 408927 wrote:

December 3, 2010 at 12:04 am #1232071@process – your Dad could just go ahead and do it I reckon, provided there’s the local community support.
without giving too much away, they live in a fairly rural area TBH compared to young josh, damo, Titch and Biotech or myself, all of us in fact live in towns… the fact there is enough spare garden space is a bit of a hint…
the main thing is community building though – I occasionally ride past that area and got the impression its full of posh folk in big houses but there seem to be loads of green/hippy types at the same time…
December 7, 2010 at 11:56 pm #1232072@process, get your dad to get in touch with these folk raaa
