      “Wikileaks founder accused of rape

Swedish authorities say they have issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, on accusations of rape and molestation. The warrant was issued late on Friday, said Karin Rosander, communications head at Sweden’s prosecutors’ office. Swedish police have been trying to contact Mr Assange, but have been unable to so far, she told the BBC.
Wikileaks has recently gained attention after leaking a huge batch of secret documents on the war in Afghanistan.”

Could be true of course, but if I were a betting man…

Sweden is a fairly liberal / libertarian country though with regard to free speech and bending the rules of copyright – consider the relatively low penalties the Pirate Bay lot got. I wouldn’t be surprised if the feds tried dirty tricks, but its impossible to do these smear campaigns without having some sort of previous intelligence on the target.

it has a much more “politically correct” criminal justice system than ours – they let you choose your court and prison dates so you can stay in work, a Swedish jail cell is as good as a student flat in England, whether or not the allegations are true, the feds have probably found out that he has a character trait of being a bit forward/forceful with women and made use of this. thats how they work, they find peoples bad character points – so if someone has less of these its near impossible to mount an effective smear campaign against them..

I don’t even think the Wikileaks revalations told us all that much which wasn’t completely fucking obvious, and just stirred the pot and caused more damage! The info also betrayed peope who were helping the “west-friendly” security forces of AF and PK fight the Taliban/Al-Quaeda..

“As more detail of the information contained in the ‘Afghan war logs’ emerges it appears clear to me that, despite his protests otherwise, Julian Assange has seriously endangered the lives of Afghan civilians. The logs contain detailed personal information regarding Afghan civilians who have approached NATO soldiers with information. It is inevitable that the Taliban will now seek violent retribution on those who have co-operated with NATO. Their families and tribes will also be in danger. That danger should not be underestimated.”[74]

easy enough to claim this is “fighting back against the Man” but all its done is put the expendable people (soldiers, frontline spies, civillians) at more danger. Wait till the war is over FFS!

how would we feel if a “activist hacker” got into this server, and directly or passed details of peoples PM’s about potential drugs deals or unlicensed music events to the OB?

At the very least people just treat this stuff as entertainment. At worst they revel in the tales of the “enemy” being tortured and killed, or use the info against others. There are however plenty of folks what don’t want the war, and they “fight for peace” by reducing resource consumption and encouraging peaceful dialogue across nations/cultures, rather than putting others at danger. At present we all still depend on the soldiers fighting for our resources, like it or not..

according to the guardian, there are two warrants for two charges – the indecent assault charge has not been cancelled but is not serious enough for an arrest warrant

of course there will be “dirty tricks”, but I wonder how much Mr Assange leaves himself vulnerable for these? I feel that if you want to judge others you should be prepared to be judged yourself…

Will be interesting to follow this and see what happens. Probably just coincidence he runs Wilkileaks but you never know.

BBC News – Wikileaks encryption use offers 'legal challenge' this is rather interesting if you haven’t read it already Mr Lighting.

I’d say it was more than coincidence, but he shouldn’t have dropped his guard, does he not know about the risk of honey traps?

interesting stuff, but not really much different from old style espionage where one message was concealed within others…

Only difference is that this is meant to be virtually impossible to crack, although that has been said before, even with “impossible” encription.

someone has the key, and keys can be obtained under duress. I find the ethics of this stuff a bit questionable – the encrypted package could contain anything – child porn, pro-taliban stuff, right-wing propaganda – yet people are downloading it.

Even with dodgy data mining stuff like facebook etc you at least get to talk to your mates using the service – its like recruiting people for a crusade TBH to download the file, not much better IMO than the fucking taliban or whoever the “enemy” is supposed to be!

I’ve been interested in military history for the last 20 years from world War II to the Cold War and I feel people just don’t realise how much of a “real war” we are in at the moment. OK our feds have done a good job keeping down domestic Islamic extremism but it doesn’t mean everythings nice and peaceful.

if the world doesn’t sort it the fuck out with regard to resource allocations etc there’s enough hate and anger around as well as enough soldiers and military matériel to keep the war going until I am in my 70s or 80s and both NATO and Islamic nations have said they will dig their heels in..

depressing isnt it really. Still, the world seems to always be like this its just the players that change. Not that that makes it much nicer. *heads off to find the whisky bottle*
