TBH thats what I would have done myself if I hadn’t become a raver and also found that fixing computers and counting stuff pays better at the moment..
TBH there isn’t much paid work about in the media world unless you are willing to compromise a lot of your principles, the paying jobs are usually stuff like being crime/fires/accidents reporter for the local rag (you are guaranteed a story every day and much of the source material is handed to you on a plate) but it can be quite soul-destroying.
Even the leftie journos jealously guard any regular work they can get, there is a lot of back-biting and those who are too rebellious lose out.
This is worth a read..

Was funny to watch a couple of journo’s being chased up the road by angry locals :laugh_at:

I’m in the middle of deciding whether to take a national diploma in either Print Production or Music Technology at college, I haven’t a clue as yet!

It was the paper from my local town… it was extremely monotonous. The chief editor wanted to be a sports journalist for a major newspaper, but had ended up being shunned into “climbing the ladder” and was doing exactly as you described – getting updates from the local emergency services about incidents, reporting on petty crime and the latest council schemes that no one could really give two shits about.

However I suppose if I don’t have regular work in a area as competitive, I’m gonna be fucked!
Quote:This is worth a read..Cheers, very interesting read it was! I find the idea of freelance journalism and travelling quite appealing, but also as mentioned in that link, there is a big risk of losing your original ideals, something I never want to do.

I’m in the middle of deciding whether to take a national diploma in either Print Production or Music Technology at college, I haven’t a clue as yet!TBH if I was in that position I’d go for the print media course… you don’t actually need to go to college to learn how to make music as there so many good on line resources on here – I know a lot of people (including relatives of mine) who have done that music course and enjoyed it but found it very difficult to get any paying work.
However even if you don’t want to work on a newspaper, there is always a demand for people who can produce readable printed documents, think of all the flyers for takeaways etc that get put through your door every day (well at least round here they do). You could work for a printing firm but also transfer the skills for helping friends with flyers, zines etc..
The harsh reality is that we all need money/jobs to survive, and even if you don’t want to immediately leave home having a bit of cash to contribute to the family can get you a bit more freedom and independence.
You can use the same computer to do both documents/design and music anyway, and most of my friends who are musicians have a normal day job and use it to fund their equipment purchases.
And if you want to get opinions across the printed word still has a higher reach than any internet site (as you need a computer and telecommunications circuit to access the net – a flyer, magazine or book can be read anywhere)
Also I think it is going to reach the stage where the printed word will have more freedom than the internet – a document typed on a non-networked computer, and transferred manually (using a portable memory device for instance) to a printing press cannot be monitored, suppressed or intercepted in any way before publication.
April 17, 2007 at 8:26 pm #1103146Yeah I already dabble in music production a bit… I might compromise and do an ND (equivalent of 3 a-levels) in Print Media and then a single AS or A level in Music Tech. The only downside is that with just an ND, I get either Monday or Friday completely free :groucho: Sounds great to me!
Ideally I would do a blend of music journalism and political journalism, that would be perfect… I don’t mind working on a publication for a while, but the idea of being rooted to one single audience for the majority of my career wouldn’t appeal to me at all.
Still plenty of time left, in terms of short-term aims, a job in Tesco to fund a shared house next year will be my first step up the ladder from erm… washing dishes :laugh_at:
