I see this lot every day when I cycle home from work.

The bulk of them are good natured and obey traffic laws – TBH I felt a bit sorry for them as they give me the impression they have spent so much on their cars but can’t actually afford the fuel to go anywhere decent (they drive round the one way system in a circle!)

Seems to be what people do here instead of raves.. :you_crazy

CAR enthusiasts out to prove their innocence have today pleaded for people not to tar them with the same brush as boy racers after a protest in Ipswich.

Around 150 car enthusiasts parked up at the car park behind Zest nightclub, West End Road, and held a peaceful protest to demonstrate they do not want to cause trouble or break the law.

The group parked in bays, paid and displayed and protested peacefully for more than seven hours.

Ray Connors, 21, was one of the protestors. He said: “We’ve had enough of being moved around from car park to car park, and of being treated the same as boy racers.

“We wanted to prove a point so parked up and behaved ourselves as we always do.

“We even walked round and picked up other people’s litter as a gesture of goodwill.

“There were a few boy racers who drove into the car park quickly so we had a go at them. It’s these people who have damaged our reputation.

“I’m glad we’ve made our point but I can’t see it ending here. I know it’s difficult for the police to see who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, who use the road as a racetrack, but they have to realise we are different.”

The protest, on Sunday, involved around 35 cars. Both security staff and police told them to move on but when Ipswich Borough Council was contacted it was agreed they were not doing anything wrong.

The Evening Star reported last month how, following complaints from residents, Ipswich Borough Council pledged to clamp down on groups leaving litter and racing vehicles in the West End Road car park and the nearby car park at Staples, Russell Road.

But the car enthusiasts say they gather in the area to compare their modified cars and talk about improvements they plan to make to their vehicles and want help from the police and council to organise more legal cruise events and to find a place in Ipswich where they can gather unchallenged.

Ipswich Borough Council is this week to discuss a report from Rodney Cook from the StreetCare department and it is thought a permanent solution can be found.

Suffolk police say they are aware of the situation. Acting Inspector Caroline Brinkley said: “Our concern is with prosecuting the road users who do abuse the use of their vehicles and act in an anti-social way to the annoyance of the public. It’s these people who are at risk of having their vehicles seized.

“We recognise there are people who regularly visit the area who are not breaking the law and we do not want to hassle them.”

I suppose its the garys’ equivalent of a Critical Mass protest.. but instead of actually going somewhere you sit on your arse…

I do feel sorry for those kids though, and sad for the future.

Many of them look barely old enough to drive; salaries aren’t very high down here and working hours are often long due to competition from outsourcing and new entrants from other areas.

Those cars are going to be a big money pit for a young person, particularly with insurance costs etc (insurers are removing the loophole where you could insure the car on your mum or dads policy)

just 7 or so years ago many of them would have bought an old banger instead, spent the rest of the money on a set of decks and tunes or a PC and had a lot more fun 😉

Got to admit isn’t really my scene either but think it’s wrong if they are just criminilised automatically coz of a few dick heads wonder if the council could organise anything with Foxhall stadium, kinda built for it really!

I expect they can and this makes perfect sense; but as soon as the council are seen to be “subsidising” this in any form both citizens who don’t want to pay for it and the more conservative minded councillors will whinge like fuck.

The more I think about this though I am becoming worried that cruises are actually replacing raves..

at the more recent raves I have been at (both in SE England and East Anglia) so many people sit in their own groups/cliques in their cars and don’t really interact with one another as much as they used to it may as well be a cruise with a stack…

Now this I can understand in autumn and early Spring due to weather; but in high summer?

Also seen this happening at warehouse parties which makes even less sense as there is always usually a place inside the warehouse where people can all chill out together..

Also cruising involves less hassle and effort as they tend to use the same car park each time as meeting point near to where the drivers live; and people have a habit of choosing the “easy option” (plus if you have a nice car you are constantly worried about damage and rave venues are usually at the end of sketchy tracks…)

Yeah, last Norfolk one I was at someone got “spiked” with acid, went belting down the double parked, hit several cars, injured at least one and from the tales I heard a couple of others had to dive for their lives. He abandoned the car and did a runner just as a posse were going to have words with him.

Maybe it’s not a replacement thing but it does involve an excuse to drive and I reckon you attract less attention in a really big crowd of vehicles. Been to a couple where it’s more like a seperate festival camp fighting your way to the rig(s).

I was just wondering whether I may have met you there 🙂 I think it was around the same time various people were invited to guess my age and came up with answers from 19-22 (which I was obviously quite pleased about 🙂

Hehe, you were being lead round by a young man with a smiley face and small goatee? If so, I’d triple dropped and was having the time of my life trying to figure out what time meant 😉 I was the one with ponytail and nose ring to differentiate from old dread. The coke, k, mdma mix I mentioned in another thread was just about to be consummed when the one and only plod that shut it down arrived next to that, erm, fire

there was a bigger roadblock earlier but the cops on this went away (looked like they were traffic cops, they probably went away to hassle some gary boys 😉 )

its definitely better to negotiate rather than try and fight cops. Even if you win once they come down harder on the next crews next time.

The crew will need to beware as well of being done for licensing violations which can happen months after the rave (why do you think the cops turned up with a CCTV unit?)
