You may have seen this, I copied it from another forum. What are your thoughts on it ?

Author : A-TechI guess I don’t usually put news that isn’t directly related to Drum n’ Bass on the front page, but this is a story that really gets my goat.
You may or may not have heard that recently Sony were snapped for putting software hidden in a few of their music CD’s, that when run on a PC, copied a rootkit to your PC so that it could it protect its music from being copied. This constitutes a cybercrime in most countries, and poses a major security risk to affected users as well as a drain on system resources on their computers (albeit a small one). Worse is the fact that non-expert users trying to uninstall it may damage their system.
Currently there are a few lawsuits pending against Sony, but I feel that this is such a massive disrespect to Sony’s customers, that people may need to go further than that.
Basically, if you are going to buy Sony – Don’t! Cameras, chose Canon. Games machines, choose X-Box or Nintendo. Portable Audio, chose Ipod/Creative…..
In the end, Sony have shown that even one of the most highly regarded labels in the world will stoop as low as possible (that being in the realms of hackers and virus makers) to protect their profits.
No Sony, its not on.
December 1, 2005 at 11:02 pm #1068079although the offending CDs were AFAIK only sold in the USA, I support the boycott for many other reasons.
I have worked in the AV field for many years and used to set up professional broadcast production systems – I have used lots of professional and consumer equipment from all the main Japanese manufacturers including Sony.
Although Sony has (or had) a good brand reputation, I have personally encountered
- equipment made incompatible with other items from other manufactures, despite agreed standards. Different levels, connectors, protocols etc, absolute fucking nightmare to integrate with other manufacturers kit. Often they deliberately seem to deviate from standards to encourage “supplier lock-in”.
- numerous design faults on new equipment – basically the paying customer is used as an unpaid tester, and when they return faulty equipment its grudingly replaced on warranty after a long wait
- lack of access to customer service
- reliability and robustness problems
and I would say I have noticed this with Sony equipment above any other manufacturer, including “multi-branded” Chinese equipment of the sort sold in Maplins et all under a myriad of different names (soundlab, altai etc).
I no longer purchase or specify Sony equipment for any purpose.
they may have innovative kit but they do not test it properly, do not look after their customers and have a very imperialistic view about their kit – you do it the Sony way and you pay a premium. Hardly surprised they are using virus-ware on their music CDs.

December 1, 2005 at 11:10 pm #1068080Same here GL. The only two things I own from the Sony family is the ps2 and my minidisc. Ps2’s seem to have a life span of 2 years before things go wrong and the minidisc only allows you to copy an mp3 from your hard drive to MD 3 times (it’s easyish to get round this but annoying that they have implemented it in the first place). Plus you can’t download from MD to HD in the same fashion. So you have to record the entire disc in WAV then encode to MP3.
I avoid all other sony products as they just don’t seem to be very well made.
In fact, a friend had a new 32″ widescreen tv from them. 7 months down the line it was shagged. Luckily it was a rental jobby, but it was a brand new tv!
Mind you (although it’s not sony) I’ve worked for Sanyo in their TV production plant and the state of some of the tubes is unbelievable. They had a leaky roof where they kept them all and a lot of the metal housing on a large amount of tubes were rusting away.

Im really glad that DRM is getting some high profile attention. Theres been LOTs of media pickup on this. Legitimate users are blatently being screwed over here.
They always screw people over with their non-standard power adaptors aswell.
