I’ve been looking into trying my hand at mixing etc for a while now, but I can’t make the decision between whether to start with vinyl or cd’s. I’m not partial to either but have been given various bits of advice telling me to go either way. I’m happy to invest in vinyl as it’s some thing I can spend my moneey on that isn’t consumed but I would just like to know which you guys at partyvibe think i should go for.
Cheeeeeeeers :love:October 29, 2012 at 10:38 pm #1260992vinyl all the way! Respect
October 29, 2012 at 10:39 pm #1260986I havent the foggiest, from a propper perspective but i do like vinyl when listening to mixes – but this may be coz I’m old ;P
One thing we noticed on sat was the younger guys didnt seem to mix their tunes but play one after another and we found this a little disturbing

October 30, 2012 at 12:52 am #1260987All that stuff is old hat now. Get Traktor.
October 30, 2012 at 1:31 pm #1260990This is just my opinion, and I can’t spin vinyl. Here’s my 0.02 cents worth – first thing to get is a mixer.
Once you have that bit of kit, you can start off learning the basics with a couple players of ANY sort. Be it scrappy old turntables and a couple ancient mix LPS. You don’t HAVE to spend lots of dollars on fancy kit to get some basic skills.
Why limit yourself? The mixer is the only vital thing, and that is the most fundamental DJ skill. Being able to synchronise 2 base beats so you can slide the mixing knob from one tune into another.
Likewise, if you’re good with vinyl, no reason not to learn to incorporate other player formats.
And there’s not much respect shown for DJs that CANNOT spin vinyl, who HAVE to have CDs.
Foundations should be built broad, deep, and solid. It’s not so much which kit, it’s more a case of boosting your understanding about the process.
Later on, you will appreciate why people spend silly money on some kit (because some tricks you have to have the kit for).
But just having fun with mixing a few tracks – all you really need is the mixer and some ingenuity in wiring up different sound sources to it. That’s how mixing started, back in the 80s days of house parties and improvisation. Only legend I’ve even heard of from those times is Afrika Bambaataa.

Cheeeeeeeers :love:Whats your favourite genres of dance music? bear in mind some genres appear to be 100% digital. they are no longer even released on vinyl. Certainly psy trance, uplifting and euphoric are rarely seen on vinyl these days, I think psy trance was the first to move to CDs. 99% of DJ’s I know now other than hardstyle and drum and bass DJ’s use CDJs and even then most of the time they are playing out digital files burned on to CD. Increasingly common are DJ’s using laptop computers and various kiinds of controllers.
November 3, 2012 at 7:57 pm #1260989I’m into a wide range but especially drum and bass, raggatek/hardtek, house.

Or get software for free and spend less cash and see how much you like it.
GL pretty much said what I would’ve.

There are lots of decent DJ schools out there.
February 12, 2013 at 11:23 am #1260993Oldthread but if you really loved Vinyl you could just get Serrato or something similar, plays MP3s onto vinyl..
February 12, 2013 at 11:30 am #1260985I love vinyl and it will always be my prime choice for mixing, but I aint no technophobe, I will give anything a go, from traktor to trying to sync up to instances of flash playing PV radio LOL (I joke)
I only had a short time with cdj’s but they were pretty much same as any form of mixing.
February 12, 2013 at 12:50 pm #1260994Seriously though if you wanna use vinyl but can only get mp3s of your tunes check out Serato Scratch live.
