The music seems to be all about the midrange nowadays – harsh, screaming synths that smack you in the face, rather than the deep bass and grooving drums of earlier dubstep. I like hearing the odd tune in a breaks set or something just to change the mood up a bit, but after a couple of tracks I just find it loud and boring.
I guess the midrange-heavy sound comes across better on crappy PC speakers, iPod earbuds, Youtube and phones, which is how most of the kids nowadays are listening to music. I’m not sure some people know what <80Hz sounds like anymore! Sometimes I'll go round to students' houses and they'll be like "check out the bass on this!" and the track will have a fairly weak sub, but a ton of distorted, wobbly nonsense over the top of it.
