As human beings we wear many masks. Some to protect our true feelings, others for more dubious intentions. But the fabric of each mask originates from the scrutiny of society. We are born with the Tabula Rasa just to have our identity distorted by our peers around us.

The New York based experimental band Vicava has released their latest song “Keep Serving” as a critique on society’s influence on distorting one’s self image but offering a means to liberate from the masks we wear and evolve into a transcendent being; and their music video falls nothing short of that.

The video has a dark allure that eerily mystifies the audience. As the song begins there is a black backdrop with only a simple face made of plaster and untainted perceptions. However as Vicava’s enigmatic “Keep Serving” progresses, the mask begins to alter it’s form with labels and obscure “scratches” denoting the metaphors of society’s infamous labeling. Every few seconds the mask suffers more of these alterations all over, to the point where it’s barely recognizable. Different labels such as “control” and blotched out eyes have a powerful meaning and a more sinister appearance to the mask.

Towards the end of the video there is a moment of illumination. Not from the video’s mystique and theme but from the mask itself. As the lyrics from Vicava begin to shed light on becoming free from labels, the mask absorbs all of the insignias and begins a transformation into a “higher-self”. The mask sudenly blinks and morphs into an alien look alike with black eyes, a symbol of transcendence from society’s distorted vision of how it sees the world.

“Keep Serving” is a visual chronicle of the transgression from being weighted down by social oppression to breaking away into your own identity. Vicava’s experimental music takes on a life of it’s own and shatters the masks that once held them back with this video. This is trully an ode to artistic expression with the allure of shattering social conventions.
