My Rampage Turbo series has traditionally been about rediscovering the best old skool freeform sounds, but for this 15th edition, I wanted to take things in a new direction … by playing two hours of some of the best recent freeform sounds! This is the first mix I have ever done solely on CDJs, so it’s a bit of a departure for me – I hope you enjoy it!

‘Scuse my ignorance – and lack of genre knowledge – isn’t this banging tekno??

I was hving alaugh with some DnB promoters on Friday about sub genres – when I grew up (ha ha that’s a laugh) there was three types of music: Hardcore Jungle Tekno (which is either three types, or in fact, just one type) plus house plus garage…..these days I am so fcuking confused it sacres me.

NO offence Pearsy – I have a few of your mixes, and they are all banging….just stuck with the labels these days!!

Yeah, this is freeform hardcore, I used to hear it called Nu energy at the big pay raves like slammin vinyl. But I think that was mainly cos the Nu energy collective was the only label that was playing free form at that particular event. It was born out of the sort of hardcore/techno that billy Daniel bunter and DJ energy used to play back in the 90’s. Fast 303’s off beat basslines, uplifting sting synths and 160 bpm ish.

Well that is my personal take on where it came from but I could be wrong.I hate trying to define stuff into genres too but I find it really funny when you get things like “dubstep” LOL

Reminds me of “progressive electrohouse synthesis”

Sorry to have not responded sooner, never got the email notification! Freeform is a bit of a stupid name tbh, this stuff was originally called trancecore, as it is kind of a cross between trance and hardcore, and honestly I thought that was a better name! There are lots of different genres in dance music, I suppose it all depends on how specific you want to be … sometimes people go pretty overboard with the micro-genres.

I was listening to this one when I was walking to town on a really windy day, for some reason the music really suiting the windy conditions.

Always nice to see a new mix from you though mate. Cheers
