I have a small laser hire business. Just a low power multicolour rig, nothing special.

Hi Lily – normally this sort of post is frowned on, as although this site is international, it is very “European” in its outlook and in European culture its not seen as polite to immediately try and sell something or promote your business in a social occasion.

I know things are different in Asia though, as I am half Chinese!

But you have been 100% honest and not even posted the link to your site or business anyway so I will let this post stay – but its worth pointing out a few things.

Firstly, most of the people here won’t have the money or space to buy wholesale quantities of lighting equipment.

They might buy enough for one sound system. Usually they buy this through somewhere like a online store in London selling DJ or studio gear, or CPC Farnell in England (probably known as Element 14 in Asia). That way they get round issues like language barriers, getting replacements of faulty kit quickly enough (like a few days rather than a few weeks). Unless your business has some way of getting kit to England or Europe in a very quick fashion, and can deal with what would be classed as small orders, you might be better off networking with Farnell/Element 14 to get the UK/Europe distribution.

Also many strong lasers are restricted items in England and Europe, because silly little boys shine them at aircraft. I am sure Chinese kids as well as those in other Asian nations know better than to do that as for one thing it could be their mate on his/her national service in the plane (my own Dad did his NS for the Malaysian Air Force) , and if they don’t get shot at for this tomfoolery they probably get a fair few months prison.

In the UK if you try and import these lasers without the correct paperwork you will only find them all seized by the Border Force and make a big financial loss.

That said, I bought for something like £15 a small laser to put in my room – which turned out to be a class III B! Way too strong, it gives me a headache to look at it, even from a distance! it came from the computer shop (rather than a place selling installation kit for large places) and I was thinking how in hell are these things even allowed to be sold so freely? (to be fair it did come with a bunch of warnings but not everyone reads them)

it is currently sat switched off on my workbench and will be put into a crate of “dangerous things, to be treated with care” like cables what could have live 230V terminals on them and other similar things that I will only experiment with in good light and sober.. I might swap it with some friends what run a rig for something interesting. Even then I’d want to be sure they are careful with it, or someone will put their eye out..
