is anyone else having a lot of DNS problems at the moment? I can see on my router screen that a lot of DNS queries are not being replied to by the NTL DNS; but what is strange is that it is only about 40% of sites not receiving a reply; surely if it was just NTL which is kaputt no sites would resolve anywhere in the world…

NTL were having problems with their proxy caches last week in our area which meant that some sites were unreachable. Could that be it?

I read on NTL announce the warnings of these problems; but they are unfortunately still going on – a month down the line! Also, I can get to “corporate” sites of big companies and media organisations without problems.

Certainly at “peak” times (like the start of the UK corporate business day around 09:00 local time) I am having particular difficulty getting to partyvibe – and other party sites such as squatjuice, headfuk et al…

I quite often have to use the IP address to access partyvibe

and also checking the screen of my router, I notice that the DNS queries are being thrown out presumably downstream of NTL..

it may be a local NTL problem; but I’ve even noticed it at work sometimes…

I do remember reading some techie sites warning there was a disagreement between some big companies about how DNS should work; that one had taken unilateral action to route unresolved queries to a commercial search site they ran; and that this would “poison” the way DNS worked.

Can’t help wondering if this is potentially the cause; or worse still, some uber-corp has implemented a “pecking order” for DNS queries, prioritising the responses to “hosts who pay the most” 🙁

But before I start screaming “conspiracy”, perhaps there is a perfectly rational technical reason for why this is happening. Anyone got any ideas??
