theres quite a few oldies on there … i like the ”blue rave” one … sounds like an interesting sugar treat

March 28, 2007 at 11:31 am #1101930I’ve already ended up at the Co-op and bought (amongst various other food items) 2 packs of Haribo Starmix, there were some “traditional” type sweets as well (albeit in plastic packs) but they were 99p!
I’m sure that even taking into account 20-25 years of inflation plus imperial/metric conversions thats a big rip off.
you can still buy most of the original sweets on line, although I have avoided this for health reasons…
Unfortunately I think they are too much hassle for modern shops to sell in the traidtional form (from those big jars on the back counter), they can’t be sold as barcoded single unit items so take up more time on the checkouts, and I suspect that adult customers are far too impatient to wait for kids selecting and buying sweets these days.
When did you all last see a “traditional” sweet display? They were certainly around into the late 1980s…

They were certainly around into the late 1980s…We had one in south molton about 5 years ago (tiz a video shop now) I think he closed coz after school kids would ask for a small ammount of something from the most inacesible jar on the highest shelf,whilst thier mates filled thier pockets with whatever they could whilst the shopkeepers back was turned lol
Nothing changes lol the old ones are the best ones!
Is a bit of a shame coz it was a really interesting old shop all polished wooden counters and shelves filled with glass and clay jars and a beutifull old ornate till that looked like it was about 70 years old
March 28, 2007 at 11:49 am #1101936theres a couple in norwich. on the market theres a stall that sells them all, but them sweets must be sitting there for yonks and in the summer heat, hhmm not very appealing

I remember that Mars did a “cool it” campaign many summers ago encouraging people to still buy chocolate bars in summer and store them in the fridge….

and there is a few old skool sweets shops about,,letchworth and bedford being 2 that i no off…

March 28, 2007 at 5:57 pm #1101932I remember those vending machines you would get outside corner shops, that either dispensed sweets or toys for between 5-20p (as inflation increased in the 80s).
Any of these still exist? I suspect they have all gone in many areas as they would get kicked in within seconds these days for the coins or torched :hopeless:

theres one near me thats been vandalised, still chained to the front of the shop tho
but yeah dont see em much now

Pear drops, cola cubes, acid fizzy cola bottles.
Sherbet you can buy by the wieght.
Old style pink shrimp and fried eggs (the new ones are NOT the same)
SPACE DUST! excellent stuff (still buy it!)
And does anyone remember sweets called Dinosaur Eggs or Watermelons?They were a bit like giant gob stoppers (I’m going back to the late 70s early 80s now up in Lancashire) you could only just get them in your mouth, they were fantastic. I’ve never met anyone else who remembers them so . . .
