I hope he recovers – must be equally gutting for the promoters and everyone else as well..

on the new laws the cops will just shut down places and revoke their licenses if this happens too often – who can blame them though? If we can’t regulate ourselves without violence the authorities will simply do it for us.

A CLUBBER was recovering in hospital yesterday after he was gunned down outside a nightspot.

The 25-year-old was attacked by a group of men after leaving the Fridge, Brixton Hill, in the early hours of Saturday.

Following what police described as an “altercation”, revellers heard a loud bang then watched in horror as the clubber fell to the ground clasping a gunshot wound to the arm.

He was rushed to hospital and was yesterday in a stable condition.

The Fridge was closed in the aftermath of the 2.30am shooting with the agreement of the owners but no weapons were found.

What kind of event was it?

Sadly, these things happen all the time. This incident has received attention because the media can link this to nightlife. Plus it comes immediatly after the Hippodrome lost it’s licience, more focus on our binge drinking culture.

Two guys were shot, one didn’t survive, 5 minutes from where i live in broad daylight last month. Not a mention in the national press…

tried to find this out but no luck (wouldn’t surprise me if the promoters swiftly pulled all listings and can’t blame them either!).

Trident cops are investigating which usually means both victims are black – but TBH that means nothing as far as music policy is concerned, in London although some genres have a certain ethnic mix clubbing is fairly multicultural as you would expect.

urban75 lists the place as mainly putting on hard dance and trance nights – our own “thread history” board confirms this – pulling up plenty of posts from the commercial hard dance promoters (one of whom got herself banned for agressively bumping her threads so often!)

That said, I’m not sure if it really matters.

Someone being shot and injured is inexcusable at any music event, even if it is garage/grime or whatever….some genres have bad reps but the truth is that an angry violent person is a threat any large event, be that a licensed or free one. What does matter is that a culture of violence is becoming so ingrained into the urban music scene, particularly in London that any clubber may be at risk now at an event. Although it wasn’t all smiley happy families “back in the day” there was this “unwritten code” even the dealers and gangstas sorted out their disputes away from the events..4

but people just can’t check themselves these days; they bring their troubles to the rave to sort out and then bring things all on top…

Of course. But i’d be more shocked if it was a hard house night that it happened at. Just trying to get a feel for the type of crowd there.

I’ve heard about a few bad things happening around the fridge as it happens. I’ve also heard the doorman play a part in the tension there too.

Personally I don’t like the place anyway. Both times i’ve been there is seems they have packed as many people in as they can, it’s like being in a sardine tin.

Hope the guy recovers and doesn’t have an serious problems.

its the “Londonistan” factor… (BTW I realise thats a non-PC term for here but I use it to mean an area with many divided resentful communities who hate one another are in disputed territory and have easy access to weapons, not to mock any particular race)

as holeydel said shootings, in London are commonplace – this has actually been the case for 20+ years – operation Trident was first set up in the 1980s but Scotland Yard try to keep that quiet!) However, as they usually involve working class young men as both perpetrators and victims, no one really cares apart from a few quickly-forgotten grieving relatives.

they only make the news when its something like “east european immigrant bloke shoots english rose-type girl like the recent Harvey Nicholls shooting”

I think you’re right though that bad security staff and packed environments create much of these problem

although guns are more a London thing they have caused problems in other city clubs, including our local “superclub” the Matrix being shot up by rival UK Garage crews; something which basically helped kill that venue. I ironically, the bouncer on duty took his own life with a firearm about a year ago because he felt powerless to stop the violence.

Club shootings are less common in the countryside simply because there is a different gun culture which revolves around (usually) legally held firearms – rifles and shotguns are harder to hide! (round our way middle englanders regularly kill each other over domestic disputes)

and as for other music genres I’d agree there isn’t a gun culture on techno-based music, but fights have happened at many predominantly techno-based nights and even psy-trance events in this area!

Legal venues attract townies; and even without them there is as much male competitiveness on the alternative scenes as the mainstream ones.

I personally think ketamine has done a lot to defuse things by creating “false euphoria” and making it physically difficult to fight (it would be rather like doing 12 rounds with Mr Blobby). without it IMO there would be way more trouble; the vets’ indications of “restraint of sub-human primates” seem rather apt here!

the space thing is a big factor as well. Many fights and robberies in clubs and warehouse raves occur when the intended victim is literally backed into a corner by the attackers or put in a situation where there is a crush (such as stairwells and corridors), or when a packed venue brings together two rival gangs.

IMO less crime happens at “bumpkin” raves and moots simply because the terrain is more open and there there are no stairwells etc! A potential victim could easily get away – and/or even pelt their attackers with rocks/stones, also such a scuffle in the open is usually noticed by others who may be more confident about trying to defuse the situation as they also have space….
