we do that here, but the dog is trained to press an alert button that wardens in the sheltered housing will respond to (and/or notify a care agency) rather than the public emergency number.

The owner was lucky the 911 operators must have found out from their database about the assistance dog, its most likely in an area of the USA which is big but the 911 centre is stll local.)

Where I work a patient/service users record will show what pets they have (including assistance dogs); especially as round here there are numerous older women who keep half a zoo in their house, some of their pets are not quite so well behaved, others can just scare the shit out of new staff from other countries; such as the 90 year old hippy woman who kept a 3m Burmese python in her house – bear in mind many of our workers are from Asian nations where there are 200 kinds of snake, at least 163 of which are poisonous.

in most EU countries the Communications Ministry discourages autodialling of 112 or its local equivalent by telephone equipment (and dogs and cats; although in other North European nations both young and older women seem to make these creatures behave (they are trained to fetch the DECT telephone without putting teeth marks in the case nor false dialling numbers).

In the UK a 999/112 call is handled anywhere (often ours go to Scotland or Birmingham first and then get passed to Ambulance at any one of 3 control rooms which can be 100km apart). There should be a message on the operators screen with the address of the caller but that doesn’t always correctly go down the line, and although 99% of the call handlers do their best, there are some times when I check the quality control recording that I think maybe a dog would have done a better job answering the phone. (to be fair the way things are set up is a bit silly; the old method where nines went to the OMC (Operator/Maintenance Centre) usually in the biggest Telephone Exchange near your location) was far better for everyone, as the staff would have local knowledge.)

I just downloaded a 112 app on my mobile. When I call from that, it automatically send my mobiles GPS-koordinates at the same time.
