I have a pile of DVD’s that my girlfriend would like me to rip into .avi files to go on her external hard drive media player.

Can anyone recommend good software too do this? I have been trying to use No1 DVD Ripper but i cannot get the files at a sensible size because there are so many options to choose from.

At 500mb the quality is too poor to be honest so i was wanting to make the files about 900mb/1GB in size.

I’m only a novice myself but aim for about 750 – 800mb so you can fit them on a CD if needed and encode with Divx.

DVDFab is pretty good, and does DVD to mobile formats (and can get rid of those pesky region encryptions etc:wink:)

Can’t remember what I use. “DVD Encrypter” I think. It’s fairly simple and easy to use. It’s shareware so you’ll have to buy after about 10 trial runs.

I ended up using #1 DVD Ripper and after playing about with it I have found it too be a good bit of software, its shareware but I have “registered” it so I now have the full version.

It turned out to be really easy to get the films to the size you want, all I had to do was choose the film length and the size of the file I wanted and it got it pretty much spot on. There are loads of other options to playwith but I really don’t understand them so though it was best not to play about too much.

Apparently it can get around some of the copy protection found on some DVD’s too, which is handy as i think its wrong too stop you ripping your own DVD’s to watch.

I now have a good collection of kids films to watch :biggreen:

while we’re on the subject, can anyone recommend some free software that will convert ogg vorbis files to a format that, when i burn it to dvd, will play on a regular dvd player?

you will need an ogg to mp3 converter I think for most standard dvd players [as most only play mp3]
think you can do that in audacity

i could actually do with a video file converter as i have a few videos that don’t work on the external hard-drive/media player and only on me PC
