      Hi,

I’m new here and pretty green, looking forward to good advice and support 🙂

At the moment tho I have just finished my first rig ever, and I am looking for a place to test it out. low key kinda thing, not lots of people just a test – then get it on the go as much as possible over the summer.

Im in surrey and I think theres a lot of people here who would appreciate the kinda vibe im after – like, not so much the hardcore hard drugs cru but more the one love kind, u know?

so, any ideas where i should test the rig out? looking forward to keeping in touch and making new friends.

id have an asbo on my house in seconds 😉

but, perhaps its possible – i guess i could speak nicely to the neighbors… but they are mix of churchgoers, council estate scooter boyz and OAPs.

im not from guildford – but, i may end up heading out there for a test in the woods somewhere if i still cant find a location soon…

Good luck with tryin to put a party on in Guildford, you’ll need it. Surrey police are really on the ball in general, and I can imagine any party getting closed down pretty quickly.

I guess thats just what happens when you live in a middle England hell-hole though… 😉 (can’t wait to leave in a couple of months time)

I guess if you’re from Surrey you probably know more than I do about legal venues, but theres a couple of places in Guildford that might let you put a night on, The Star, Platform 9 and The Boileroom. Also the university has a big spontaneous party that happens by the lake on the campus at the end of the spring term and people set up their own rigs (thats not an open invitation for anyone with a sound system to show up btw, its mainly just students there, but if you just brought something small no-one would mind)

is difficult. surrey has a massive population of middleclass whingers, and the police have to pander to the majority taste, which doesnt involve people having much fun.

plus, there arnt many places that really dont have any residentials within earshot, even in big woodlands there are mansion houses dotted around everywhere.

the problem with legal venues is simply the cost but thanks for suggestions, and i will ring round and see.

eons ago friends used to have a good soundsystem in a ‘van’ and go down to the woods and have a little shindig, but those days seem long gone round this way 😥

thats exactly the thing i want to keep going – im not into massive parties as there are (for me) always problems like people turning up just to deal, and all the arguments that go with that, people that are out of control and really aggro, etc.

so its little gigs, i rekon 50 ish people is a good number. my rig is about 5000watts but numbers dont equal loudness. imma find out how loud it is soon and i will get back to you. A good friend is going to sort lighting out, so it all looks good – the only problem is working out where is good places.

driving a van into the woods somewhere secluded isnt a bad way to go at all, and if/when the police do turn up i’m not after any hassle, id rather pack up and head home (crew in tow even) than piss people off.

we need to take the word rave back, so people stop associating it with just misery for local residents. problem is i guess that like all underground scenes it attracts its fair share of ne’er-do-wells who dont care about keeping things nice.. but then, iv been ringing round everyone possible, the council, the police, landowners, the national trust, and basically there is no legal way to put on an event even on common land that is owned by all of us to be enjoyed as such – so the powers that be have just forced it to be illegal, so now it cant be regulated or legitimised.

just like weed – its illegality doesnt stop anyone smoking, it just makes life shittier for those who choose to, with their god-given free will.

tank girl , i assume you relatively local to surrey?
what about you mr cheese person?

im up for getting in contact, meeting up etc if anyone is interested in all this, should be an adventure rather than more of the same old…

Yeh I’m at the uni in Guildford doing a sound recording degree, though this is my final year so I won’t be around much longer. Sounds like you’ve got a good idea though, good luck with it, a few small parties in Surrey would be wicked. And if you’re ever in need of a breaks DJ give me a shout!

Surrey though is particularly stubborn, they have never liked even legal raves going back to the 1990s, and non participants views on the scene have been permanently soured by certain crews overdoing things in the early 2000s. Basically what happened in East Anglia from 2004-2007 happened in Surrey/Hampshire/Thames Valley from 2001-2005…

That said, if breakbeatterror takes a good look at a map of the entire region he will soon find that Hampshire, Oxfordshire and the 5 authorities what used to be Berkshire are just a few miles away 😉

most of these areas have also been rinsed by illegal raves – but in some parts of the region (particularly the less “posh” ones) its much easier to put on legal events.

thing is im not even wanting to do raves as such – they are too big and i am too inexperienced. this is my first rig, and i have a full time job. so i hope even in surrey it wont be too hard to get a TENS thing through for something if its only 50 people.

its still hard as hell finding an actual venue though. I have found quite a few places but they all are national trust land/carparks…..

surely you cant just apply for a temp event licence anywhere? or can you?

I did read the post you put up btw, and it was very helpful indeed and gave me some hope about the scene 🙂

Anywhere where you have permission to be and its safe… there is stuff like traffic flow, fire safety, access for emergency services to be aware of and the other licensing issues. All of these are actually set out on the Licensing Policy for whatever council your event is in…

A few weeks ago a young lad what held a hall party in a church hall in the Thames Valley Police region got “busted” for being over capacity etc, but he was let off with a caution and “given advice” on how to hold events legally. This would hint that at least TVP will try and give people a chance, possibly Hantspol as well.

These days cops work increasingly closely with the local Councils and the NHS to monitor the “costs and risks of the nighttime economy” and its the findings from this what shape the licensing policies for some areas. None of this is secret or “hidden” (it might be buried in boring minutes on the council website or can be found out from doing a bit of research in the local Press).
