for some reason when i dj loud places for split seconds i cant hear a thing, like a few seconds of being complete deaf … i think thats due to the fact my ears are not liking this anymore and may be a sure sign of stopping

if your ears ring afterwards you are damaging your hearing and might be well advised to get it tested to see how badly ๐Ÿ™

i think my problem all stems from my left ear being burst from an early age i cant hear much at all, my right gets a battering because its the only one i can use to mix

All the more reason to take care of the hearing :groucho: as its all you have left…

How exactly are you mixing now [volumes, equipment, headphine types] and what are the problems you have with it?

i only use one ear to mix, i only have the other headphone (left) on to stop it becoming worse, and to be honest my right ear is becoming a little quite now, i need the volume increased all the time just so i can make the mix then turn it down, i think its just because i always had my music way to loud growing up in headphones and although i knew my left ear was damaged never thought itd effect me anymore … silly mistake!

i use a mos mixer (part of a cheap package but cant afford another)
                sony mdr-v500 headphones

to practice at home i only use two pc speakers and a small sub cone for bass

                regards ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you use ear plugs? I’ve tried a few but they have been budget (never over ยฃ20) and just made it hard to mix. But i am getting worried about my hearing (i pretty much have constand tinitus or whatever its called) what advice would you give?

Cos you wont be able to hear when your older and thats not necacerialy old. i know people who have almost lost their hearing from constant drumming and other instruments whgo are my age! Careful careful!

if your at a party all night then ear plugs are a good idea, theres some disposable ones from halfords its like ยฃ10 for 5 sets, one set lasts a night, unless you want to use the same set … thatd be pretty rank though haha when i dj i use the headphones with the sound right down to protect the old ears until im wanting to mix

I dont use earplugs for mixing but I use enclosed cans with a volume control on the cable. They cut out pretty much all external noise and I tend to keep them as low as I can get away with and still mix [these days mixing is often done on the fly as the second tune is coming in and I listen on the main PA :groucho: or the monitors through the headphones..]

I never ever redline a mixer – this causes the distortion which damages most hearing [mixer are mixers- leave amplification to the amps guys…] and when I am not mixing I tend to always use earplugs when in the presence of amplified music [unless the rig is mine :weee: cos then I know its not distorting…]

Pretty much always use earplugs all the other time if the music is really loud. If I forget the earplugs [it happens :groucho:] I use wet toilet tissue to make impromptu earplugs as I cant bear the noise most rigs make…a distorting rig is physically painful to me. My normal earplugs are the green ones you buy for 50p a packet – I am good at losing them…..

Same here, I can only use one ear because im about 75% deaf in my right ear due to an operation I had years ago..

Also you probably have the same issues with monitors (If there’s just the one). If its on the side of the deaf ear, makes very hard work ๐Ÿ™‚

dogs (and kids, until they get older) can often hear higher frequencies and thus are affected worse by HF distortion

but WTF was that kid doing in that area? why didn’t his parents, and/or a group of responsible friends find a suitable place for him to chill out in and accompany him there?

even in a warehouse there would be quiet areas….

ive been to too many parties with kids present, some are ok i guess, i went to some more lemon jelly style ones in chesire which was basically just a microscopic glade which wouldnt do them any harm physically but i still believe it isnt the right enviroment, wouldnt like to piss anyone off with kids saying that ๐Ÿ™‚

dogs are another thing, i swear to god, do they scare the crap out of anyone else when your dancing away and all you can hear of thousands of watts is a bark and the knowledge an invisible dog is walking aboot!
