      Revisiting this…

Edcast (aka Oddcast) was probably the best alternative to shoutcast’s own DSP for sourcing shoutcast DNAS – in fact, many would argue it was superior in many ways. For example, it can also source Icecast natively, not in dumbed down shoutcast emulation mode.

A year ago, or more, I can’t recall, “oddsock” shut down, due to undisclosed issues.

A year before that, however, I’d already tinkered with the code, adding an ASIO version. Primarily for my own, unusual, set up. When oddsock shut down, I decided to step up and continue his work, hopefully improving on it. See Features for some of the things added/fixed so far.

The question is, what work does it really need? Porting maybe, but IIRC is was pretty bug free when they stopped.

The ASIO support is way better on the latest version of Eddcast Reborn (though it is one of the betas) and it has a limiter and gain boost (so you can run your studio at EBU level of about -10dBFS Max programme level and boost the programme audio at point of TX, (which can now be -0.1dbTP) but use the limiter to catch any accidental “overs”).

I’ve stress tested it by sending +20dBU (analogue) though the TX (grams + jingles channels full on, all 4 players going and the PPM redlined – this is not my normal operating procedure, but it still did not sound too rough raaa

Dear oh dear GL – don’t think I’ve ever heard you swear so much before 😉

It’s never been acceptable to use the transmitter to alter the audio, it’s job is to take an input, convert the medium, and output in a true a form as the original input as possible.

whilst shaping it for the amp non-linearity, pre-distortion, antenna mismatch, beamforming, rain and stray pigeons in the way, etc etc

excuse me being grumpy, i’m a recovering GSM transmitter developer. thankfully i never had to deal with calculating the rf side, i just fixed bugs they told us of !
