foundthis on some random link – hey were used for music outdoors in the middle ages before leccy was discovered. It was so loud people got nicked for playing them at the wrong times/places and the term Rauschpfeife was used across much of Northern Europe to denote loud musc in general..

this Dutch lady is playing one (they let him use the basement of a factory after hours!)

even after reading your post and sitting there for a few secs whilst she sat down expecting it to start really load , it still made me jump when it made a noise lol … (I used to play the clarenette and sax .. and that’s way louder then both … I can tell just by the recording!)

according to this German site they developed it as an improvement on the schawm (presumably to make it even louder)

EN : Der Sackpfeyffer zu Linden – Rauschpfeiff
DE : Der Sackpfeyffer zu Linden – Rauschpfeife

Our Dutch friend appears to be not just in a factory but banished to a plant room which contains a large and noisy metal press, and possibly an industrial size gas heater to the left of them. It appears the heater is shut off either to save energy or because otherwise the fan would mess up the recording (and hence why they are wearing that big jacket, a cap and scarf indoors), but it must be the only way you can play that without being hauled up for geluidsoverlast 🙂
