I am from Glasgow but have lived in ‘the South’ for 27 years. South to me is lower than an arbitrary line drawn from the middle of London straight across the UK to somewhere in South Wales. North of that is the midlands a terrible wasteland, and when you near Middlesbrough, you are getting North.

Hope that helps, but to be honest, I prefer not to leave London. I was ridiculed in public for wearing a fringed mini skirt and leggings in deepest Surrey in 1991 and have never returned.
