exactly. The costs of access to the network are were it all mounts up and people need to recover them by advertising
Conventional broadcast networks are fucking horrendously expensive as everyone from the telcos to a myriad of private companies wants to make money along the way.
Until recently some of the bigger companies had spare cash and would out of goodwill help along a few “yoof TV” style ventures but its all about asset stripping and increasing profit now.
I saw some old boy try to set up a local TV station and lose his entire pension, a second mortgage and get disqualified from being a company director because of this failed venture. He was a complete idiot who thought he could “fight it out in the free market” using 1950s broadcast management tactics in the 1990s – but it still shows the risk involved
Internet streaming is far cheaper and at present freer (although by the time it becomes popular to the masses I’m sure the big companies and Ofcom are going to step in) so its best people get their stuff in now..
