thats where “market forces” override engineering considerations.

There are already lots of very sensible, well designed connectors and switches – but some manufacturers (particularly the Japanese) declare their own “standards” to lock people into buying peripherals from their sources (DC power connectors are a good example!)

also equipment is made to be disposable rather than repairable (and consumer demand seems to demand ever more miniaturised kit) so there;s a lot of custom switches etc.. often stuff is designed smaller than it should be IMO..
