you see it in court reports where someone claims “addiction / mental illness ” and hoping for a reduction in their sentence as a reason why they done a nasty shitty violent crime as opposed to just accepting they did it and taking their punishment…

Definitely mate, reminds me of the incident in Manchester last christmas where Anuj Bidveh, the Indian student got shot dead by some local tosser, who when appearing at court, instead of giving his proper name (Kieran Stapleton I think), repeatedly said to the judge ‘Psycho Stapleton’. He obviously thrived on the nickname & was more than happy to live up to it.
