I used to wrap it inloads and loads of tin foil (if the base in is in wraps then i suggest wrapping the wraps(!) in cling film first then tin foil)
keep it in a box (mine was a wooden box) and somewhere high up - the base still smells though the tin foil stops the smell from 'leaking out' beware though once you open the tin foil the smell is very strong i think its nice others think its vile!! Other than that I don't know!!

if it's pasty it doesn't matter if it goes hard, but if it's soaking into the wrap it's prolly picking up all kinds of wierd ink chemicals from the flyer / magazine it's wrapped in
it doesn't matter if it goes hard, it will still be potent
my advice is to not keep it lying around the house as you will end up boshing bits here and there and you'll suffer in the long term

if it's wet and sticky dry it out so it turns into a rock and then wrap it in loads of clingfilm
