Are these Liberty Caps?

Ello peepz, Yes this is a very cheeky 1st post seen as I have only just discovered this website but I couldn't find a better community to ask!!!

I been out today tending to horses and came across an abundance of mushrooms which I believe are Liberty Caps! I went out once b4 picking years ago with an ex who had a degree in horticulture so was pretty safe but now have no contact with someone with such knollege so thought I would share a link to a picture and get ur opinions if poss. Some of the mushrooms have the nipple thing going on and some don't but they were all growing together!

So what ya recon... to munch or not to munch, that is the question!!!

this is what I thought too and I also thought they should all have the nipple thing going on too but some do and some don't but they were all growing together so surely they must all be the same thing. And I'm sure I once read somewhere that in the UK there is not actually any dangerous look alike, is that true?

IMO the dark coloured ones highlighted are NOT liberty caps. However... there ain't nothing in that bowl that I haven't eaten in the past, and I've never been poisoned in a bad way :)
If I were you, I'd have brewed up and tested'em by now. But that isn't the sensible thing to do of course :wink:

yeah after studying them in more detail i concur, none of them are libs. I see a lot of those round where i live. they dont curve in enough at the bottom to be libs, and are a bit too wide, among other things.

Yeah, I guess another thing about the non-liberty caps is that their stalks are thinner and darker. Liberty caps are "chunkier" than other toadstools of a similar size.

Those are not magical.

Don't be put off by the size, some liberty caps can be pretty big but as Buzz says:

I reckon you would be lucky to find any this weekend TBH. Its too cold, too wet and they like moist (not wet) warm (not cold) days. I haven't looked this year, but I reckon its not ideal conditions.

i used be right into hunting but its gotten to the point that i just cant be arsed with shrooms, too much hassle gathering them and i always get stomach cramps when i eat em anyway. theres some much better alternatives without all the faffing about.

ps as people have said, their is no way on earth they are liberty caps, you really should get a mushroom identifying type book thing at the very least, a friend to guide you at best.

:( nasty! I never think libs are worth the risk of getting caught picking a class A drug, its hardly easy to be subtle unless you are miles from other folk.

I usually bruise the surface of the cap and if the bruised area turns a slightly blue/purple colour after an hour or so then the shroom contains psylocybin.

The mushrooms this year seem to be sprouting a lot later than a few years ago, i picked some last week so they might still be about.

there's the big difference between locals thinking you're a nutter and leaving you to carry on (which they might still do in Scotland), or calling 999 and dobbing you in.

in some areas such as Thames Valley a lot of teenagers did fucking stupid things when shrooms were "legal", including munching loads in high school, freaking out at teachers, bursting into manic laughter and overturning desks etc which of course tends to get the Police called to the school. Or other kids panicked and got took away in Ambulance.. similar things happen in East Anglia..

So cops are well clued up as to the negative effects of shrooms, and might well decide to arrest shroom pickers "for their own safety". The penalty is normally only a caution but its still hassle, and every rural area now has a "rapid response team" - there's a lot of fairly nasty rural crime like serious domestic violence and targeted vandalism / harrasment so there are more cops around in bumpkin-land these days anyway.

Can Liberty Caps have light coloured gills underneath, or do they have to be black? also can anyone point out other fungi that is similar? so I can compare.

I'm amazed at the misinformation.

Liberty caps do not all curve in on themselves. As they age they open, some until almost flat.

It is possible for them to grow to the size of those in the posted photo.

Gill colour can vary slightly (brown - purple).

Not all liberty caps have a defined nipple.

It is not too cold for liberty caps, they will start growing when day time temps are below 15C and night time temps between 0C - 10C and can withstand a slight frost. The season was still going strong last weekend when I found 200 in an hours picking.

Liberty caps very rarely bruise blue.

libs have a pointed nipple and black gills. any curved top ones you have to swims knowledge are not shrooms. swim may be wrong but when he shrooms he likes to be safe rather than sorry!
