How many hours a week do you read on average? I always to through phases, wont pick up a book for a few weeks or months, but then read 3 this week. Trying to watch less crap on TV!

I personally love reading but I'm a bit like you 1984, I won't pick one up for months then, I'll read one book after the other for the next few months.

I'm currently reading The Eagle and the Wolves by Simon Scarrow.
It's set years back when Rome invaded Britain and it's a quality read, very graphic and full of detail. there's 9 books in total as well and i'm on the third one. Awesome book series!

I'm having a crack at Papillion by Henri Charriere at the mo, but the thing is like a fucking breeze block. It's a true story of prison breaks and adventures that's been made into a movie (which if I knew before I started reading the thing I would have just watched the film). I've just got to the part where he's knocked up a 12 year old girl.
Go on son!

HOLY CRAP, that's hardcore reading fella. Not only reading but there is a LOT of learning and understanding required with that little lot :crazy_diz good luck with it :)
I haven't got the patience. I love a bit of Dick me... Philip K Dick that is. Some of his more psychotic books are a bit difficult (dull'n'hard work) but others are inspirational. He wrote the book that turned into Blade Runner don't you know : ) (Do androids dream of electric sheep). Other films based on his books are Total Recall, Scanner Darkly and Minority Report
Plus, other pulp I like is any book by Robert Rankin, what a STAR!

I reckon my favorite author has to be Sven Hassel
He's a Dutch dude who in WWII fought with the Nazi's in a Penal Regiment - a regiment made up of deserters, bandits, murderers etc. None of the officers wanted anything to do with them cos they couldn't be trusted. It's mainly fictional story telling based on true characters and some true events, and the novels are funny as fuck cos of their complete disregard for authority...

Have fun mate. Read a few light-hearted fictional books at the same time otherwise you're going to go onto political overload.
I recommend:
Tony Benn: A Political Life, David Powell
This book doesn't actually focus on Tony Benn as a person, but rather on upholding true democracy and regaining it in this country... as Benn was greatly committed to this, he is relevant in a lot of it - but in general the book is an excellent insight into how and why certain political decisions are made and how democracy is flawed in British and world politics. It also explains shifts in modern politics, and has a lot to say about why and how Blairites (preceded by Kinnock) hijacked the Labour party and created this fallacy of New Labour.
Power and Terror, Noam Chomsky
I'm sure Chomsky needs no introduction for you - this book is a fantastic read, in which Chomsky explains some of the lesser known (as well as facts about the well known!) atrocities and corruption throughout history and the modern era. What makes this book a bearable read, what with all the despair, lies, war crimes in it's core subject, is the complete optimism and commitment to change that Chomsky has, and how he wholeheartedly believes it will change.

I read everything from Christian romance to horror to Ayn Rand....check me out @ Shelfari (but the majority of the books are Christian). I also luv Jane Austen.
I have never read any Jane Austin, I am determined to give it a go one day though. I am currently reading John Peals autobiography. I read far too much trash fiction eg Ian Rankin
I am quite tempted to join Shelfari but I just worry that the site will end up closing down, it seems like quite a time investment to put all the books up their I have read

I did just join but then I lost interest :(
I always have to own a book before I read it and refuse to throw anything other than the very worst. Its like a physical record. I really want a reading room when I am older. Well, reading room come gentlemen's study complete with leather backed arm chair and a nice selection of single malts and cigars.
