This middle aged American dude was (rather foolishly IMO) carrying out modifications/maintenance on his loaded pistol...

On January 19, 2008 I had a negligent discharge of my pistol. It's a Rock Island full size 1911. .45 ACP loaded with Federal Hydra Shok ammunition. This round utilizes a 230 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. This is a very good self defense round, because the bullets expand as they pass through material like animals and people.
I'm tempted to call it an "accidental discharge", but to me that implies that the gun fired without the trigger being intentionally pulled. That doesn't apply in this case. I intentionally pulled the trigger, I just neglected to unload the gun first.

LOL @ the self defence bit ... he needs self defence from him self ... mby this is why he shot him self :laugh_at:

them bullets are f'in nasty .. they are banned in international warfare as they are that nasty .. however they are not banned for useing out side of war ... the english police are thinknig about useing them as the bullets they currently use are too penatrative and can go through the person being aimed at and even 2 walls after and cause danger to bystanders

There is indeed the global paradox that military are not permitted to use expanding rounds but civilllian police services are I think many forces outside metpol already use semi-jacketed semi wadcutter rounds which do expand slightly but not as much as hollow points, which have only been used by MPS for operation Kratos (the now discredited shoot to kill operation against suspected suicide terrorists).

I'm glad the American shared his experiences to warn others, but I fear the people what need to read that site most will just ignore it.

He mentions how it cost $20000 in treatment - his family paid $3000 in excess charges and $17000 was paid for by the health insurance, I think he was lucky because although the gun was discharged by his own negligence he clearly wasnt mentally ill or suicidal so they had to pay out.

Although I feel the UK gun laws are slightly restrictive, I think I'd rather have stuff like the NHS and no guns - Britain actually had an armed society (both citizens and Police) until the 1920s, and London was an even worse place at night than it is today...

Their 6 year old son, my grandson, stayed at home with a family friend. All he knew was that "Peepaw got shot."Peepaw = US slang for grandpa in some areas..

I hope that in a few years time when the boy gets to fire his first gun (probably about 9 or 10 knowing the Americans) he is a bit more careful with it than grandpa was..!
