HSBC has been doing this for ages, as have other banks what specialise in dealing with the Asian community.

under British / EU law you should be able to walk into your local branch and ask for an "Islamic" account irrespective of your race and religion, it is illegal for LTSB to refuse this.

However you won't get interest on balances in credit as Muslims don't believe in charging interest on bank accounts, which is why LTSB can afford to reduce the charges for these types of accounts as they aren't paying out interest (which would otherwise a fair few quid as culturally Muslims and other Asians tended to avoid running up long term debts with external creditors and had a culture of saving rather than spending).

Ironically many of the moralistic articles in the Daily Mail (particularly the ones what involve celeb stalking) are researched and written by Pakistanis! in 2003 my mates squatted the house next door to Kate Winslets parents, and every time she was in the news this Pakistani chap would randomly turn up in the front garden just waiting there.

We knew from his fashions etc and his shifty behaviour that he wasn't a local (my mates knew all the Asian lads as we would sometimes smoke with them) and it took us a while to work out what he was up to but his job was to stalk the winslets and phone through to London so the rest of the paparazzi could plot up there.

He was very surveillance aware - he could walk away before anyone had a chance to challenge him (as if he was also stalking the squat) and had we complained he would just have dobbed us into Thames Valley Police. TBH I had a grudging admiration for him as he clearly was dedicated to his job and did it well (and its better than getting people to blow themselves up on buses after all). I was doing a lot of amfet at the time and to see a man being even more hypervigilant than me was actually impressive in a warped sort of way...

I also noticed a few years ago (when I used to keep an eye on where the Mail were getting their info from) a lot of the younger reporters were British Asian. It may seem bizzare but people often are so ambitious to compete for a media job they'll willingly work for a company what hates them just to get their experience on the CV, and of course they combat this by passing their hate on to others.

I work in a finance role and TBH some of the ideas are actually sensible, honest and fiscally prudent (ever noticed that busineses owned by British Asians tend to be fairly successful?) so maybe the banks can afford to give Muslims a better deal as they are less of a business risk! its no more discrimination than the fact you need a million quid cash or some silly amount like that to get an account with Coutts and Co, or that I can get a Co-Op smile account but some of my friends have only been able to get a normal Co-op account..
