On Thursday the final TV set made in England is due to roll off the production line at Toshiba's factory in Plymouth.
When it does, it will mark the end of mass TV manufacturing in the UK - a technology the country invented.

BBC NEWS | Technology | End of the line for British TVs (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8222421.stm)

unfortunately I think the article is overoptimistic with regard to the content. Britain lost its TV (equipment) industry because the sets of the 1970s were expensive, and unreliable (to the point of occasionally catching fire!) compared to the Japanese competitors - it did take about 20 years for this to happen..

now our content has gone from some of the best drama and documentary shows in the world to shite talent contents, gameshows and reality series, and jobs are being lost in the hundreds in production. soon our production industry will go the same way as the TV sets if they carry on like that..

I love how if something was invented in scotland they say it was in the uk, yet if it was created in england they mention that.

its like that with sports aswell o.O
