Yeh, tbf much as I love my decks I wouldn't enourage anyone to buy them nowadays. Lots of labels just aren't bringing stuff out on vinyl anymore, as I realised when i went to do my yearly record shop the other day (I've hardly used mine over the last couple of years due to living in the creative black hole that is Guildford). Most of the tunes I wanted were digital release only.

Vinyl just isn't cost-effective anymore for a label when they can email a wav to a few online record shops and still reach the same target audience (and this was breaks/dnb I was trying to buy, which has held on to vinyl a lot longer than other genres).

It's a dying format, really sad but true. A lot of people under the age of 19 or so have never paid for music in their lives, what with Limewire and Bit-torrents etc. The new generation of DJs are less likely to buy records than those in the same position 5 years ago. This, and the availability of lots of good mixing software (also free if you download it on the sly) IMO has pretty much killed vinyl.

So I suggest that unless you're into turntablism, don't waste your money on decks, get Traktor and a MIDI controller and buy your music online.

im 16 as of yesterday and im true to my vinyl, but i guess cd decks have their advantages

if you want the vinyl feel on digital format, get serato scratch.

also, dont go for cheap, cheap is shit. go for reliable. second hand can also be good just check it first.

youll really be wanting direct drive. gemini TT02 are ok but they arent best at pulling. i use gemini pt2400 that i got second hand, they are really excellent for the price i think..

gemini tt01 is shit.. theyre belt drive also. they pull like a tortoise..

go for second hand mate, or more money.

and yes it is often about the make, have you noticed that buying from makes that are well established are much more reliable and just.. better (example, technics). theyve been established in the market for a long time and know what people want, and how to do it.

whats your budget and ill see what i can do? youll also need a mixer..

excite you =O

im not sure 130 is going to get you anything brand new, but you might be able to pick up a bargain second hand. i think you should save your money until you have at least 250 quid mate, you want something that lasts and is quality, i want you to make a good purchase.

when i was looking at decks, i looked at cheapest possible, but i eventually came to senses before i bought mine..

well it takes a little while to learn it..

well its quick to pick up (depends how fast a learner you are)

but to do a good mix, its trickyy, need a big selection of tunes too id say.

nah mate i would definitely say no to that package! it would be 130 quid down the drain trust!

Fair enough I know what you mean, for me nothing beats mixing with proper records, but just bear in mind that if you want to mix current tunes you won't be able to buy them on vinyl for much longer.

Forget those belt drives. If you've ever tried to move the record about on your dad's hifi turntable thats pretty much what they'll be like.

I'd go with what everyone else has said, if you want decks have a look on ebay for some second hand direct drives. I've never been that seriously into DJing and my old Numark TT-100s off ebay have worked perfectly over the last 8 years. One good thing about vinyl dying off is that the price of decks has gone down a lot over the last couple of years. Don't worry about what they "sound like", despite what hifi nerds might tell you (who are usually deaf 50-year-old car salesmen with too much cash and time on their hands anyway) I don't think it makes much difference which model you buy (there's not much in the way of audio circuitry in a turntable, much more important is the cartridge you put on the end of the arm).

But computer mixing is the way forward whether we like it or not, and definitely has its advantages. Whilst the "sync" button on traktor instantly does away with hours and hours spent beatmatching in my bedroom, it does leave the DJ free to do much more creative stuff with plugins etc.

vinyl whores cannot come to terms with this because they spent years perfecting their beatmatching and then some newbie comes along and makes a better mix than them!! :laugh_at: they can't take it

i always hear an incorrect arguement that you can do more with vinyl, bullshit can you

I can understand why Josh is still into vinyl as when i was into his age I was into editing mixtapes using reel to reel recorders - bear in mind though digital recording cost more than cars then!

I used to DJ using vinyl and still have my old skool tunes but am only just getting back into it now and have started experimenting with various digital software...

I like vinyl but I think realistically it will become a niche format, especially as the dance music scene is currently contracting due to the money being pulled out of it - as cheeseweasel says there is a lot of free downloading and its changed permanently the way people view music and creative content, plus theres the wider societies stigma against loud music being linked with drugs/anti-social behaviour meaning that it increasingly becomes a lifestyle rather than a career choice..
