iirc Phytoplankton naturaly orrcurs in seas and oceans and is pretty much the bottom of the food chain .. it's what other minute organisms feed on and even big ones like ray fish ect. ... it is the soul diet of ray fish therefor must be packed with nutriants in order to keep the rays alive and healthy .. if it's good for the fish ..can't see why it's not gonna be good for you

If you eat a ray fish which earlier ate the plancton then I guess you'd be eating a super super food

If its green and tastes like off fanny then its probably Spirulina.

nah i asked him if it was spirolina and he said no, supposedly better for you than spirolina. this stuff tastes proper wrong, like your eating the sludge at the bottom of a fish tank. It looks like a big lump of dark green charcoal, all the spirolina ive seen was just in a powder. forgot i had it actually, definatly gonna eat the lot when i get home, feeling pretty rank after the weekend.

For a cheaper alternative try Aquarian Goldfish Flakes. They are extremely nutricious and taste a bit like fishy knob.
35% protien
vitamin A D3 E
3% fibre
13% ash
various oils

I've been eating the fish food for six weeks now and apart from an orange tounge, fishy breath and smelly burps, i've not noticed any adverse side effects. Infact i feel realy healthy. don't knock it till you've tried it. sometimes you've just got to get over your intitial feelings and dive in. i did and i've not looked back since!
you can get round the initial dry mouth reaction by mixing it with organic goats milk (the flavours actually compliment each other) or mixing it with vegimite where you hardly taste it at all. enjoy!

started off with just a pinch now and then. then i got to quite like the taste and i was eating it by the teaspoon. feeling how healthy it was making me feel i started looking for better ways to eat it like mixing it with other foods. now i'd say i get through about one 50g tub a week. that works out at about 5 table spoons each day. i get 50g for £3.50 which is 50p a day which is quite reasonable considering the health benifits i am getting.
I've been doing some online research into whats in the stuff and its a mixture of fish and shrimp meal (high in protien and omega oils) soya bean meal (proven health benifits) and spirulina (which has a host of vitamins, minerals and fatty acids as well as all 8 essential amino acids). so it really is a cheap alternative to fancy expensive health suppliments and i would recomend it to anyone!

fair play i might have to give that a go as well, 5 tablespoons is quite a lot of fish food to eat tho! reckon i might turn into a fish if i ate that much... I know its not easy to say, but what would you say the health benefits are?

seriously guys, i'm a vegetarian. i don't want anyone making them selves sick by trying fish food on account of my having a laugh. that said the stuff i found on wiki and on the back of the tub, about nutrition, was true. It probably is a superfood.

funny you should say this i've twice caught one of my kids with his hand in the tub and suspicious flakes and a guilty look all over his face.
he said 'it tastes gooood'!. now we keep it out of his reach.
As far as protien is concearned, nutritional yeast (which looks remakably similar) is a better bet. you can get it in health shops. it is a superfood.
Marigold Engevita Nutritional Yeast Flakes 125g by Marigold from GoodnessDirect (http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/579698_Marigold_Engevita_Nutritional_Yeast_Flakes_ _125g.html)
DJCliffy, although it is 45% protien, dont get excited by this cause it is next to impossible to eat that much but it is an excellent addition to a health diet and stuffed full of B vits. If its new protien sources you want try these
1) quinoa a south american grain with 13% protien full essential ammino acid comlex and good carbs. rated by World health oranisation as same protien quality as milk. readily available in health food shops. boil it and use it like rice.
2) amaranth as above although difficult to prepare. tiny grain size of poppy seed. can be popped like popp corn and mixed with breakfast cereal.
3) mung dhal. not to be confused with mung beans which are green. this looks yellow and course. this is the stuff that puts hairs on the chests of sikhs (and they are hairy mofos) Its a pulse with 33% rather than the standard 22% dry weight protien that lentils have. make spicy dahl with it. use fresh yogurt to cool it down and serve it on quinoa and theirs a protien bomb.
4) chick pea floor (gram flour). a flour with 22% protien. make pancakes with it. 5 minute job. i got a recipie if you want.
5) soya nuts - taste dry and hard to eat but easy protien.
and by the way, anyone who belived my fish food thread is mental :laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at: :laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at::you_crazy
fish food is still tasty tho!! =)

sounds like something my Nan would say :laugh_at:
mung dhal is a split and hulled mung bean - a very versatile bean popular across the whole of Asia...
Mung bean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mung_dal)
I would think the best place for Cliffy to find any of this would be any decent Asian supermarket (the proper ones where you get a corner shop what is actually like the tardis with loads more space inside..), and takes stock from TRS (T R Suterwalla and Sons, Southall).
it is possible to make dhal from whole mung beans as well
Quick Indian Cooking Whole Mung (Moong) Dhal (http://www.quickindiancooking.com/2006/12/22/whole-mung-moong-dhal/)
better than eating plankton - IMO better off leaving that in the sea for the fishies
