About 600,000 11-year-olds are preparing for Sats in May

Teachers are expected to back a boycott of Sats tests for children aged seven and 11 in England - unless ministers agree to scrap the exams.

National Union of Teachers members, meeting in Cardiff for their annual conference, are preparing to vote on planned joint action with headteachers.

Union leaders say the tests are damaging to pupils and demean staff.

Fair play to the NUT in my opinion. I don't like the system of exams anyway, as I have little confidence in formal education and the idea of a pass or fail fixed achievement, I like the idea of personal achievement.

However that isn't going to happen, but dropping exams for 7 and 11 year olds is definately a good move. I know there's a huge push for education at a higher standard but there are ways of doing this and measuring it without making a 7 year old sit an exam.

I think this is definatley a good idea too,

I am amazed at the ammount of home work and pressure put on children - having seen my niece and nephew stressing to get it all done after a hectic day at school.
(where is the time for them to play and be children?)

it is proven that exam results do not define what job you will get and whether you will achieve in the big wide world - - just look at certain people like alan suger and richard branson as the famous ones who are often referred to to back this up

it just increases pressure and can have seriously negative impact on childrens confidence, mental health and self esteem and sets up a competative society with in schools and a huge internalsiation of the need to achieve and perform, when in all reality it is a paper exersize to do with whether the teachers are performing and to get your school to look good in the league tables.
