well, i got a moderate preference for white americans over african americans, on the Race IAT. And havin read a bit about his test, i think it is probly right that i am subconsciously racist towards black people. :hopeless:

But my dad is basically austrian, and my mum is irish... i am aware of the difficulties of bein of another culture, i didn't really fit in that well at school... i really should be pretty tolerant.

but we don't really control our unconscious mind, so despite my clear conscious embrace of equality for all, and my clear liberal leanings...

I know I like to think I am not racist and that there is no 'subconcious' racism in me..

but I'm sure being brought up in my family -
my dad held very bizzarre racist views -
based on his upbringing and total ignorance - and I'm sure he said stuff more as he knew it wound me up (as he's a bit of a wanker now but used to be a total arsehole ) you knowthe type of - if he 'knows 'em' its alright' type shit.....:you_crazy
he has seems to have become a much nicer person in the last 10 - 15 years with all sorts of his personality / behaviour changing and growing

in the book i'm readin the author describes a guy who repeatedly favoured whites over blacks in the IAT, then one day the effect didn't show up...

turned out the guy had been watchin the olympics that mornin... the thinkin bein that he had, for a change, been exposed to positive images of black people in the media.

hopefully the Obama's and Hamilton's of this world are helping to unwind some of these unconscious biases. :bounce_fl

I think If the test were the opposite round, then so would my score.

In terms of my actual opinions, I have no Issues with any race, and would like to think I treat everyone equally. Although I will admit Im more cautious, or maybe deliberately act nicer towards another "colour" person, but only because I've never really knocked about with black/Asians ect. Not through choice, just never been many In my areas. Im not nice in a patronising way, or nice if they're a nob, I just mean Im probably subconsciously trying not look racist lol. It'd probably be different If I'd met/hung around with other skin coloured people.

I think I know one Indian origined person (Although English) and barely even would call a friend (Because hes a dick anyway). I've also only had one good mate who was black when I was about 8.

All the same I don't like this test. Although It does kind of match my subconscious feelings (because im not used to other ethnicities) It doesn't reflect what I know Is right or how I act much.

Could the result be a function of the order in which I did the two parts? I had to group one category together with pleasant words first. I then found it difficult when I later had to group the other category with pleasant words.

I also think that i slightly over compensate for lack of familiarity, when in the company of people i percieve to be different, so i certainly see where you coming from on that one.

i would have thought it was useful to know if u were subconsciously prejudiced against any particular group, if u were interviewng people for a job for example.

Or merely to raise awareness...that even though we might feel ourselves to be free of prejudice intellectually, our behaviour may tell a different story.

There are several thoughts that occur tho, maybe...

1 Ur not as influenced by the mainstream media as some of us!

or

2 the Obama effect! seems a bit unlikely.

or

3 i think there is an issue surrounding reaction time, i think the quicker u react, the less likely it is that ur conscious brain is gonna get involved. Thats why it goes on about not worrying about makin mistakes, cos they want you to be as quick as possible. If i'd thought about my answers long enough, i would hope i would have got a 'better' result.

or

4 Maybe you could try it again if u r skeptical about your result. It should be reasonably consistent over a number of goes, according to the documentation. Also, u could do it with the other start point, altho the info i have already posted suggests its not that big an issue.

or

5 maybe the results profile would be different in the UK, therefore ur result would be more 'normal' (!).

Its a measure of association, rather than a 'cause and effect' thing... so it will never absolutely 'prove' anything.

I'm not quite sure i understand ur point, i think the test is trying to associate positive and negative feelings toward different groups in society, and seems to work on gender, sexuality, etc, etc, as well as race.

If the adjectives were different, you would be looking at some other association, which is fine, if you can think of a reason for doing so.

I think this test echoes your point that almost everyone discriminates against someone, in that you might survive the race test, but then there is the gender test, the sexuality test, the disability test, the 'fattist' test and on and on.

And therefore 'let he/she that is without sin (prejudice) cast the first stone'...

Not that i'm sayin racism is acceptable, but its not an easy problem to address without being extremely careful about some being more equal than others, because to renounce one form of prejudice, without addressing all such issues is surely folly...

For example, to relate this to another thread, we are all familiar with the Nazi atrocities in the concentration camps in WW2, but we might also reflect that a 'just' war was fought by the US (with segregated army units, and a deeply racist domestic policy) and the UK (which had horrendous policies in place in, for example, Australia, against the 'subhuman' aboriginals, and who had famously invented the concentration camp 40 years before, in the Boer War).

We should always be very careful about assuming we have the moral high ground.

Fuck that man. I have been to a rave once where i did some proper trippy pills and had swig of some vodka laced with acid. Anyway there was a midget there who i swear looked like a fucking oompa loompa. many of the posters have been skeptical, but i have just read a very good book about this subject, and there is loads of evidence that wot is being tested is a real effect.

in one study, subjects were shown a white or a black face, and then shown a picture of a gun, under extreme time pressure. Care to guess which group recognised the gun quickest? thats right, the subjects that saw the black faces first... :hopeless: anyone wanna argue about what that shows?

the scary thing is that the study was repeated with a wrench, the subjects still saw it as a gun more often after seeing a black face!
