all the Hawkwind stuff written by Bob Calvert was amazin, he was a proper poet. his solo album 'Cpt Lockheed an the Starfighters' is really fantastic, most old hippies will back me up on this...

Have a look at the MC5'S they are from Detroit . something tells me they will be right up your street.
As far as i know they pretty much invented the genre , their story is worth a bit of research ;)
