Video footage of the party...
"They thought they were well prepared for 100 guests but up 2000 people turned up!"
The perils of inviting "everyone" to a teenage party in the modern world of social networking websites and radio shout-outs were dramatically illustrated at the weekend when more than 500 gatecrashers trashed a country house. Thousands of pounds of damage was left behind shattered windows and ripped-out curtains at Georgian Colehayes Park in Devon, a listed building now run as a field study centre by descendants of the industrialist who first mass-produced tarpaulin.
Initially blamed on BBC Radio 1, which featured the private function on a "shout-out" - where listeners tell the world about cool things going on - the chaos proved yesterday to have snowballed from an ill-advised poster at Torquay grammar school. It was pinned up by Sarah Ruscoe who light-heartedly invited one and all to her 18th birthday fancy dress bash, which she presided over dressed as a dominatrix.
"Little did I know almost everyone from Torquay grammar sixth form would attend and what is more invite 'everyone' from different schools and the surrounding area," she said ruefully, as her family and decorators struggled to cope with smashed furniture and beer-sprayed walls. "Admittedly perhaps I was foolish and naive, but how often does a poster cause chaos and devastation?"

Would have happened anyway whether or not there was internet and radio shouts - happened in the mid 1980s but on a slightly smaller scale
you'd get some toff girl who would invite her "select friends" to her party at her rich parents house and those who weren't invited would crash it, or the place would get overrun anyway
a lot of gatecrashers would be there simply to piss off the rich girl and her family, especially at 6th form age where many of you are gonna move away to uni and then often permanently to a place of work, feds aren't gonna bother chasing people down for relatively minor acts of criminal damage
the only difference here (and with the other recent incidents) is the scale of the damage/gatecrashers and that it took the riot police to clear the place and the kids then smashed bare windows in the village
Not a lot different from "Norfolk" TBH (except people down here lucky enough own mansions aren't daft enough to let their teenage kids party them!!!)
I can see this resulting in the cops/councils insisting on TENS for large private parties (the legislation to require licensing for private events at council discretion already exists on the statute books, was put in around 1989 or so to stop acid house promoters blagging it)

theres a private school in our area (mega mega expensive one too, some people used to arrive by helicopter, snobbish as hell) and we'd always find out about their parties, mummy and daddy would just let them have the mansion to themselves and they'd advertise bait as fuck
i mean, they acted cringe-worthy, pretendin to smoke and "ravin" to fuckin klaxons n that, but we didn't care, we'd soon take over  werent harsh enough to cause damage tho
at our state school we knew how to spread the word without it escalatin or dicks turnin up, parties went off all the time with no shit like that. word of mouth innit, use the internet but on private messages and that!

I doubt the BBC shout was the main thing (after all there was a poster in the high school and stuff on some social network) but maybe there is only a few mansions in Bovey Tracey so one with a big houseparty would be very easy to locate. Also the mansion was previously used as a hire venue for weddings, corporate type stuff etc so its location is going to be more well advertised than others who own high value buildings, who sensibly keep themselves to themselves behind electric gates and other security measures.
If the area is anything like any village round here its fairly quiet after dark so any large movement of people in the village is noticeable.

still if you were having a party why advertise it all over the school and on socail networks seems a bit silly if you ask me

How the fuck did they get in? If i had a massive house like that and opened the door to see 500 people standing there, i'd shut it and get the air-rifle out! Should be obvious. See alot of people you don't know, don't let em in.. :you_crazy

They had bouncers, however these were overpowered by the sheer number of people. The parents then called 999 and the bobbies arrived who had to declare "code 00" (riot situation) and call for backup themselves.
In the end, the only way to clear such a crowd is to use dogs and shields which only the Police are authorised to do so or can do so effectively (which is what happened in the end). Even then the cops were pelted, "norfolk style"
This has happened several times in other areas. In other times the dad/older brothers have tried to clear the gatecrashers out by "muscle" and been overpowered and had seven bells of shit kicked out of them.

I'm actually with the OB on this one. If some little fucker threw a glass bottle at me, He'd be in for a world of hurt!!

A lot of it was a reprisal at an attempt to eject the gatecrashers
the dispersed youths also went into the village and smashed several windows of local business premises..
This is gonna be the Westsides equivalent of the battle of Yarco...

we used to do exactly this when in college / art college early 90's -
(esp to the snobby bints from my neck of the woods)
find out where it was and invite the whole pub with us
only once did I get a meat clever held to my throat - then someone saw me and said I was 'alright' and ended up getting in
bad to look back but one ended up with radiators being ripped of the wall, toilet and sink smashed and all the electrical equipment out in the garden piled up in the rain - (too many mushrooms)
the guy had invited aload of people as he wasnt very popular and his parent were away .........:you_crazy sad :hopeless:
