Hi guys. I was talking to a friend a few days ago (he is in Newcastle atm), and he we both want to go out shroom picking this autumn, but we are both novices and so don't want to pick up some nasty mushrooms. I know a few of his friends in Newcastle have been b4, and so they could help with the mushroom identification process, but I was also hoping to get my hands on a few books about it. I was wondering if u guys knew any good books which would be helpful.
P.S. If I do go shroom picking with some of my friends, it will be in either the Newcastle or Nottingham area. If some of you guys fancy tagging along, that would be cool. (obviously it isnt gonna happen for a while yet, lol).

3 books i would recomend
1. A guide To British Psilocybin Mushrooms by Richard Cooper
small book and cheap, good to carry with you out on the hunt, only colour pics are of liberty caps but those are probs the only ones ur looking for anyway
2. Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World by Paul Stamets
great book with colour pics of almost every tripy mushroom in it and how to identify them
3. Field Guide to Edible Mushrooms of Britain and Europe by Peter Jordan
general guide of whats edible and some poisonous ones you might come across, alwayse good to know.
and find pictures on the net, look at as many as u can. the more pics u study the more likely u are to identify em correctly.

ill come if im up your way at the time, but i wouldnt worry about books once you go on 1 pick with people who know what ur looking for you wont make any mistakes once you have een afew liberty caps it becomes very difficult to pick copy cats, i find all the breeds that could be mistaken for libertys look to perfect i havnt picked a liberty cap that was perfect , there always dodgy in some way shape or form, curly stalks, to domed, big nipple, wrinkly once you know what ur looking for there a peice of piss to spot so just go with your friends who know what there doing and you'll egt the hang of it in no time

i love it when you just see loads of people randomly walking round a field in the 'mushroom crouch' pose.

eat as your picking is always a good plan!! I would find that I would end up trying to sing my own version of "food glorious food"... something along the lines of...
Shrooms glorious shrooms,
eat raw or you can boil them,
At this point I would usually giggle like a little school girl whilst getting funny looks from the people out for a walk...
Oh I really need to find some shroom fields this autumn, I don't fancy a trip to somerset or ripponden to go picking again :hopeless:

there used to be absolutely fucking loads of places in the 90s, not at all too far from you. Not sure what has happened, either they've all been rinsed (most likely) or some thing done to them to stop shrooms growing there - but I thought this was very difficult to do, maybe not?

To be honest I was just fecking lazy at looking, the fields I know in Somerset or Ripponden have loads... also people kept telling me around here is shit for them, maybe they want them for themselves :hopeless:

I picked a few fields in somerset completely on me tod for years but when the rave scene started everyone was suddenly stripping the fields bare on a sunday morning.
i think they did get rinsed to fuck because i havent really seen any srooms out there since.
Someone told me you're supposed to snap the stem off half way down, leaving the base of the mushroom underground.
If you pull them all up i think that stops them reproducing (or something like that)
My other tip is to go out picking on a sunny afternoon. The shrooms are easier to see because they're drier, making them white and easier to see.

yeah it damages the mycelium. mycelium is the craziest thing ever its like an alien species
"Is this the largest organism in the world? This 2,400-acre site in eastern Oregon had a contiguous growth of mycelium before logging roads cut through it. Estimated at 1,665 football fields in size and 2,200 years old, this one fungus has killed the forest above it several times over, and in so doing has built deeper soil layers that allow the growth of ever-larger stands of trees. Mushroom-forming forest fungi are unique in that their mycelial mats can achieve such massive proportions."

just read this...
On the morning of 3 October 1799 a man known only as JS was found wandering in a state of delerium around London's Green Park, not far from what would soon be Piccadilly Circus. He complained of waves of giddiness, odd flashes of colour across his eyes and a cramped stomach. His family suffered the same effects and feared that they were dying. All that is, except their eight-year-old son, Edward, who seemed to find their situation hysterically funny.
A passing doctor, Everard Brande, was summoned to the scene, where JS told him that the symptoms had begun not long after the family had picked and eaten their usual breakfast of wild mushrooms. Intrigued by this puzzling scenario, Brande would write in The Medical and Physical Journal that the family's condition was caused by the "deleterious effects of a very common species of agaric (i.e. mushroom), not hitherto suspected to be poisonous."
Family S hold a unique position in history, as the United Kingdom's first recorded shroomers.
