View Full Version : Lost faith

regurgitron2000

Almost eight years ago, I lost my faith in God. My grandmother [whom I lived with until her death], was dying and I prayed every night for nearly twenty minutes, just begging God, "Please, let her get through this; I don't know what I'd do without her..."

I know that in prayer, God doesn't always grant them, it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

So, after eight years, I've decided it was time to try and find a religion [not Christianity].

Suggestions?

I know what you mean. I have a lot of spiritual beliefs, such as reincarnation, karma, the hindi caste system..
My best friend Mellinna said she'd take me to the Buddhist temple her father goes to and translate the monks' lessons for me..and I'm super interested...
I don't know.

dunno if is a cultural thing (regurgitron being from the USA) but although brought up as a Catholic I have never felt I needed official religion in my life.

hard to explain maybe but I feel whatever happens is more about how you act on earth rather than prayer/meditation and stuff.

That said I just live in a way where I try not to do anything too evil or hurt anyone without reason, and find if you do positive stuff it does help you in the end...

First, sorry to hear about your nan but i'm not sure it works like that does it?

if i've got u wrong i'm sorry but. . .

- it seems that you're looking for a faith but will not accept christianity because that god let ur nan die

- if the christian god let ur nan die (if it works llike that) then all the other gods/godesses/etc let her die too

- its almost like ur punishing the christian god because ur so pissed off with him/her/it (in which case you arguably still believe)

my advice would be to read a load of books on as many different religions as you can. BUT i would have to say that faith isn't a matter of theoretical picking and choosing is it?

isn't faith about something you feel is right?

Until recently, I've been quite happy with my own independent beliefs, but call it morbid curiosity, I guess I just want to find out if I can be religious anymore.
There's a void, that I think maybe a religion will fill?

I never thought of it that way.
Yes, I am still pissed. She was the kindest person to walk this earth, and something let her die.
Plus, with all the christianity bullshit I've done in my day... [sigh]
Back when I still went to church, they would read all the stuff from the bible that condemned homosexuality, and I am pretty lesbian. It takes a special dude to get to me.
I just stopped going, because I knew I'd fight them, and I didn't really want to be shunned. I get enough of that from my mother.

Perhaps instead of looking for the answers in religion you should look inside yourself? Your path will be unique to you and while it may be intertwined with others paths it is likely that it will only be exactly right for you  therefore only you can find it IMO

there are all sorts of different takes on the meaning of life etc

i dont think you can expect a religion to make you whole, thats just using religion as a crutch isn't it?

still tis an interesting subject to study, so many different ideas

ever had a look at religious/philosophical stuff from some of Australia's aboriginal population? they have some very interesting ideas about birth an death

Suggestions? I've always classed myself as a christian of the protestant failh. I take the bible as the true story of jesus who in my eyes was a freedom fightor of his time. Preying is for yourself and a time for contemplation on what is going on around you, its a time to atune yourself and bring yourself to earth.
Is god who it says in the bible? I dont know but when I prey Its for me to adress myself and i think about my ancestors who have passed away. Theres no gods and no masters just me and nature.. Though I still prey in an protestant church.....

innit. and it's fucking immoral a lot of it. the aids crisis in africa could be almost grind to a halt if the vatican would just say contraception is ok

to the thread starter, why do you need a religion? i'm agnostic myself, but at the end of the day i dont care, we're not gonna find out the answers anytime soon so why think about it so much?

the one religion i would consider though is buddhism.

Yeah, I consider myself agnostic as well. I just feel that at the end of the day, it wouldn't hurt to put my faith in something. My best friend is actually take me to temple with her [she's Buddhist] one of these days and translate the monks' lessons.

To those of you interested in Buddhism:

I quite liked to sound of Buddhism because i guess I perceived it as different to other major religions. I spent a little time in Dhramsala (dalhi lama's residence) last year, even got to see him (from a great distance!)

But it all seemed the same as the other religions to me. The people (while very nice) didn't seem particularly enlightened or happy + I saw lots of monks looking very bored during long prayer sessions. reverence and idolisation of the lama seemed just like christian worship of christ to me. I think it has some great philosophy about it (which can be said of every religion), but there still seemed to be far too much dogmatic BS in the way too (also can be said of every religion).

Thats just my limited experience with one school of buddhism though, there are many more.

Sorry to be blunt but IMO its all bollocks. Fair one to anyone who is religious tho, i guess people have different ways of dealing with their insecurities.
