View Full Version : Are we embarrassed about discussing condoms?
I found this article ("http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6928266.stm) on the bbc news site and it claims some of us are too shy to discuss condoms and their use with our partners
This is pretty scary in light of the current STD figures:
Genital herpes up 9% to 21,698
Chlamydia up 4% to 113,585
Genital warts up 3% to 83,745
Syphilis down 1% to 2,766
Gonorrhoea down 1% to 19,007
nah. not condoms. i even talk to my mum about that stuff, and she's a hardcore christian and i'm not married.
however if it was about STDs or something i'd die. even going for a check up is embarrassing.
i did indulge in telling my mum about my wearing of spongebob pants and surprising my boyfriend. he told me i got him into the bedroom under false pretenses after telling him i had something special to show him,. my dad was also listening (not to my knowledge) and burst out laughing.
How come you find STDs so embarrassing to talk about but can talk about condoms?

I have always used condoms, well unless i have been with someone for a while and we have both been checked out.
Not worth the risk i would hate to get something and end up with a manky penis

Have never had any problem discussing (all forms) contraceptives with partners - often being the one to start the discussion.
Wasnt able to discuss it with my parents when younger as 'obviously' I was a virgin until they managed to face up to the fact I wasnt a 'little girl' anymore,
since this happened was able to openly discuss this sort of thing with them,

I've never had a problem discussing contraceptives... if you're mature enough to have sex then you should be mature enough to use contraception and talk about it!
Some of my friends when I was younger 'forgot' to use it or were always asking my Mum for help... my Mum has always been open about talking to me and my friends about sex and stuff, which inturn I suppose made me the same... and because they couldn't (some still can't) talk to their mums that they're having sex and stuff - it's always my Mum to the rescue, like with buying them a morning after pill or something (my Mum has bought one of my friends several).. it's ridiculous, and all because my friend couldn't discuss it with her boyfriend!! *rolls eyes*... I don't understand how she was so open and capable of having sex, yet too silly and coy to talk about it.. I think my friend has managed to sort all that out now though, but I know there might be thousands of teenagers out there like it.
I have a contraceptive implant in my arm, just incase as accidents do happen.. and I also always get the guy to wear condoms - unless it's a long-term relationship and he's been tested... I definately don't want any form of cunt infection thankyou!!
How come you find STDs so embarrassing to talk about but can talk about condoms?because me and mum are quite open about sex.
but i feel that if i try to talk to her about STDs, i'm "lowering the tone"
my mum's only had my dad, and i presume my dad has only ever had my mum. so it's a subject they'd not really understand.
and my mum thinks i'm awful anyway because i have sex before i'm married. so bringing STDs into the conversation would probably make her have heart failure!

i never really discussed 'em with my parents, but not out of embarrasment or awkwardness, i just never had to. health&sex education does at least one job right, and thats teachin bowt contraception.
shame about the whole drug education part of it. now thats embarrasing

have you ever watched that show where that old lady talks about sex and all the nasty other things. It's quite old but they still show re-runs every now and then. It's just kinda weird listening to some lady older than my grandma talk about erections and all that stuff. lol It's pretty funny stuff though.

Would discuss it with anyone, no need to be embarrassed.
Picking the most nervous person at the till is always fun, was in Tesco's buying condoms, Durex Play and a fruit sauce. The poor lad on the till went bright red and couldn't look me in the eye :laugh_at:

I mean, you're going to be having sex with the person, they are going to see you naked and everything ...and you can't talk about condoms... come on!
But seriously, I think we need to take notice that its not just the guys responsiblity. Women need to be responsible too. Its your body, protect it, duh. If women think that carrying condoms make them a slut or whatever, go back to Jr. High...
It makes you a responsible adult, and if you can't deal with that, then you are mature enough to have sex anyway. Period.
